Many of you have asked about the upgrades going on to Nippert Stadium since the end of the spring game. While many are aware of the many changes from the Varsity Village Project, many have been looking for news on other upgrades and looks at the new field turf being laid down at this time.
Bearcat Insider spent some time on campus Tuesday and came away very impressed with the many upgrades we viewed during the day. Scott Wilhoit (Assistant Coordinator of Facilities and Operations) allowed Bearcat Insider a look at several of the upgrades. While many have seen a few photos of the new turf, those pictures don't do justice to the total look of the stadium.
Outlined in black with a deep red background in both end zones, the new field turf at Nippert is sharp and one that will catch your eyes as you approach for your first view. With Cincinnati in the north end zone and Bearcats with the new C-paw in the south, there is no mistaking were you're at. The new C-paw also sits at midfield with the new Big East logo on both 20's. But as impressive as these items are, what really sets the new turf apart is the numbers in the same deep red outlined in white down both sides of the field.
While the new turf is the first thing many notice, the development of Varsity Village is coming along great and you now get a feel for what the final project is going to look like. At this time talk is that Varsity Village will be finished by January 2006 or February 2006 at the latest.
Back on the field, talk of a new scoreboard is more than talk. What really is going to be replaced is the video part of the scoreboard. The new video board will be bigger and brighter with better graphics. But not to be left in the cold, a new video board will also be going up in Fifth Third Arena and a new logo on the court. I've seen the new logo and it's sharp.
But with all of the upgrades coming along so fast, the most widely seen is the football field. Many changes are being made at Nippert and while we could spend all day talking about them, we chose to allow Scott Wilhoit to tell you in this special video interview.
