Preseason Day Three Report

The Bearcats are another day closer to their opener against Eastern Michigan, see what happend during the third day of preseason practice as Tim Adams reports.

It was another hot day on the new Field Turf at Nippert Stadium. Here's our report from practice.

-The day started with "Media Day." All the local television stations were represented either at the media luncheon or at practice.

-Players practiced in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts.

-Elder grad, Alex Harbin, will likely seek a medical redshirt season after shoulder surgery. Alex was a greyshirt last season.

-Tyler Clifford attends practice with his left arm in a sling, but you can tell he's a coach's kid. He's always listening and paying close attention to the coaches. Tyler's father coached him at Portsmouth and played with Bearcat assistant coach, Tim Hinton, at Wilmington College.

-Unlike yesterday, Jared Martin was exclusively with the defense today.

-Prospective punt returners and kick returners included Haruki Nakamura, Jared Martin, Mike Daniels, Carlos Simpson, Antwuan Giddens, Marshwan Gilyard and Carl Jones.

-Derrick Stewart did not practice today because of a technical problem but is expected to return to practice tomorrow.

-Digger Bujnoch and J.P. Simon got significant reps with the 1st unit at right tackle and right guard respectively.

-Bill Poland was on crutches after having his knee scoped earlier in the summer.

-The #1 defensive line unit includes Donald Germany and Adam Roberts at the ends and Jamie Wimmer and Jon Newton at the tackles.

-Newton seems to have become one of the more vocal leaders of the defensive line.

-The #2 linebacking group appears to be Kevin McCullough, Leo Morgan and Lamonte Nelms.

-Most of the freshman are having to work their way up from the 3rd unit, but Corey Smith (LB) took on Rodney Pompey (OT) in a drill today and set the huge tackle back on his heels.

-Judging from the QB rotation and what I've observed the last couple days, I handicap the competition in this order: Grutza, Davila, Wess, Spitzer, Carey and Pike. The very athletic Wess stayed exclusively with the quarterbacks again today.

-The offense suffered from continual offside penalties today.

-Kevin Huber continues to impress me as a punter. In a team punting drill today he out-kicked both scholarship punters with kicks of 45 yards or longer.

-Cedric Tolbert again played with the #1 defensive unit at cornerback.

-Bradley Glatthaar pancaked freshman Donnel Mackenzie today while pass blocking. Welcome to college football, Donnel.

-I thought Dominic Goodman seemed more confident at receiver today.

-Freshman Chris Jurek seemed to have a tough day at center.

-As 6' 5" Angelo Craig continues to mature, he's going to become a monster at linebacker. The Glenville product is very athletic with a mean streak that he's controlled well so far.
