Preseason Camp Higher Ground Morning Day 4

Bearcat Insider was on hand for the morning session of Saturdays practice at Camp Higher Ground.

Although Saturday morning's practice started out reasonably cool, about an hour into the session the oppressive heat returned, and a few guys felt it. J. P. Simon (OG) didn't finish the practice due to heat, and Marcus Winston (FB) was definitely struggling at the end of practice. Trevor Anderson also left a little early, but I'm not sure it was heat related. Trevor had been with a trainer earlier in practice and later left without anything noticeably wrong with him.

-Practice was again in full gear.

-The yellow jersey guys were Marcus Waugh, Bill Poland, and Patrick Farfsing. Waugh suffered a concussion a couple days ago. He will be upgraded to a green jersey tomorrow. Poland was again rehabbing his knee. He reported that it felt a little better today but was still sore. His workout wasn't as strenuous today. Farfsing apparently has a foot problem and has talked about an operation, but the kickers say that‘s not going to happen.

-The green jersey players were Doug Jones, Brad Bury, and Kevin McCullough. Some of the other fullbacks, especially Dwight Stargell, have taken advantage of Jones‘, Bury's and Waugh's absence. Stargell has blocked well and has shown some nice hands out of the backfield. Bury was hurt in the spring, and I think it was this same shoulder. McCullough was pleading with a trainer to upgrade him to contact drills.

-Last year's center, Adam Shorter, is working as a grad assistant with the offensive line. Adam has already graduated and is getting a master's degree. He wants to pursue a career in college coaching. Adam has lost 60 pounds since last season. He said it was a lot tougher losing the weight than adding it. I know where he's coming from on that.

-Walk-on offensive lineman, Steve Huff, is now in full gear since the NCAA has cleared him. He easily fits in with his great size.

-Coach Gill has really been exasperated by Patrick Mimms and Thomas Clagett's inability to stay low off the ball and against double teams. Gill is not a big screamer , but he's really gotten after those two freshmen.

-It seems to have become a two horse race at punter. Brian Steele is getting fewer and fewer kicks in practice, but Chet Ervin has really taken charge the last couple days over Kevin Huber. Ervin had a 48 yard average and excellent hang time with his punts today. Huber has dropped quite a bit with no punt over 40 yards.

-Coach Dantonio emphasized to the punt coverage team that they will have their hands full at Penn State and Miami in September. Penn State is expected to use speedy Justin King as a returner, and all Bearcat football and baseball fans know the speed of Ryne Robinson at Miami.

-There were no changes in the #1 offensive or defensive units except Dwight Stargell has replaced the injured Doug Jones at fullback.

-David Wess got his indoctrination to the defense this morning when he ran into Brent Celek after Celek caught a pass. David's mouthpiece went flying as Celek rambled over him. He's not in QB land any more.

-Nick Davila hooked up with Carlos Simpson for a nice gain this morning, and Dustin Grutza found Earnest Jackson twice for first downs.

-Donnell Mackenzie has been working at DE.

-The defense probably got the better of the offense again this morning until the goalline drill. The offense scored all three times on the goalline (3 yard line).

-There is a family picnic later today (Saturday), and the squad heads to Kings Island tomorrow after a morning practice.
