Practice Report: Countdown Begins Towards EMU

With the Bearcats one week away from opening night of the 2005 season, Tim took the chance and spent some time watching practice.

Dave attended today's press conference and has video, but I don't know what was said by Coach Dantonio earlier today. Regardless, here are my observations from practice.

-The big news of the day was that Bradley Glatthaar had a new hairdo. I hope it doesn't jinx his "no fumble" streak. I still think he'll return to his trademark hairdo by game time.

-Adam Roberts was on the practice field but did very little. Anthony Hoke took his reps at DE with the #1 group.

-Derek Ross, Steve Eastlake, Brent Celek, and Adam Roberts were voted captains earlier this week.

-I was told that 17,000 tickets for the opener are "out." UC is hoping for a crowd in the low 20,000's.

-The team practiced in shoulder pads and helmets today.

-Marcus Waugh was lost for the season after an injury in Wednesday's scrimmage.

-Coach Dantonio's radio call-in show will be held tonight (Thursday) in studio since Tom Gregory is pouting over the events of this week, and to show his disgust for UC's administration, Gregory pulled the plug on Coach Dantonio's radio show at Montgomery Inn. Personally, I think it's somewhat childish and unfair to Coach Dantonio and the footballers. If you own a bar and are interested in having one of the classiest college football coaches in the land visit your establishment, contact UC.

-The new end zone bleacher seats will be ready by the opener next week. They're almost ready now.

-The concrete facing of Herschede-Shank Pavilion is getting dressed up. There is a length-of-the-field nylon banner acknowledging the name of the pavilion decorated with pictures of a couple of Bearcat football helmets.

-I was told the play of yesterday's scrimmage was a 60 yard pass from Grutza to Poland.

-Lovell is rounding into shape at the right time. He nailed a 50 yard field goal tonight with plenty to spare.

-The punting was again nip and tuck although Kevin Huber had two punts in the 55 yard range. Both punters suffered from some poor snaps and pressure.

-The #1 O-line is the same-Eastlake, Brown, Webster, Reinstatler, and Bujnoch.

- I believe Carlos Simpson and Dominick Goodman are clearly the #5 and #6 receivers, but I couldn't tell you which is which.

-The "Big Four" (Jackson, Ross, Poland, Giddens) receivers will all get a lot of playing time, but I believe Jackson and Ross are the starters.

-The #1 defense looked to be Trevor Anderson, Terrill Byrd, Jon Newton and Anthony Hoke along the front. Corey Smith, Kevin "Simba" McCullough, and Anthony Williams were the linebackers backed up by Antoine Horton, John Bowie/Walter Dudley, Haruki Nakamura and JaJuan Hall. Anthony Williams has had a slow but steady assent at LB. He may be bringing more speed to the position.

-Thomas Claggett seems to have moved up to the #2 defensive line with Carvitti, Wimmer, and Germany. Carpenter, Morgan and Terry Arnold were the linebackers.

-Cedric Tolbert played a lot of safety today opposite David Wess.

-If I go by scout team jerseys, it looks like Andre Revels and Jared Martin will be red shirted.

-We were going to interview Steve Eastlake today, but the Bearcats are getting very secretive, and everyone was cleared from Nippert before we could get the interview. Sorry.
