Red / Black Alumni Scrimmage

The University of Cincinnati released the following information from the volleyball program.

CINCINNATI, Ohio---Redshirt freshman Jessie Nevitt showed she will be a force to be reckoned with this season as she was dominant during Saturday evening's Red/Black Alumni Scrimmage in Fifth Third Arena.  The event marked the opening of the 2005 volleyball season for the University of Cincinnati.

Playing against many of the program's all-time greats, Nevitt led the Bearcats with 18 kills.  Her outstanding performance led UC to a 30-15, 30-15, 30-24 victory against the alumni.  Senior Maria Pongonis and sophomore Jenny Custer joined Nevitt in double figures with 12 kills apiece.

"Tonight was a good start for us," said Bearcat head coach Reed Sunahara.  "I thought in the first two games we played really well and followed the game plan we had set.  We definitely have a long way to go, but again it's a good start.  It will be nice to get into the season for real and see what we are made of."

Junior Noel Olson, now in her second year as the Bearcats' starting setter, was outstanding at the controls of the UC offense, handing out 51 assists in just three games.  Libero Natalie Dossman led the squad with 14 digs, while Pongonis nearly missed a double-double with nine.

The Bearcats started the night red hot, rolling to a 15-point win in game one.  Nevitt tallied seven of her kills in game one, while Custer and Pongonis each added six.  Game two was more of the same, as Pongonis tacked on six more kills and Custer tallied four.  In game three, Sunahara utilized a different line-up, which led to freshman Jessica Elley racking up five kills in the frame, while Nevitt led the way with eight.

Earlier in the evening, two groups of Bearcat alumni squared off with the team of Trish (Ladusaw) Alexander, Karen (Obert) Bayliff, Beth (Fishburn) Brichler, Katie Graham, Beth Herman and Rachel Torblaa taking a 30-20, 20-13 victory.

The Bearcats will kick off their 2005 season on Sept. 2-3 when they take part in the New Mexico State Tournament.  While in Las Cruces, UC will face Texas-Pan American, Tulsa and the host Aggies.
