News & Notes leading up to the Bearcats battle against Syracuse this Saturday.

-Syracuse turned the ball over 5 times last week. Syracuse quarterback Perry Patterson was 9 of 25 for 89 yards and 3 interceptions. Back-up quarterback Joe Fields threw only 1 pass, and it was intercepted.

-The Syracuse defense is a strength. It is rated #11 in the country in fewest yards surrendered and #24 in overall pass defense.

-Anthony Smith of Hubbard, Ohio is an impact player on that defense. He is 3rd in the country in pass breakups per game with a 1.71 average. Mike Mickens remains at #1 with 2.0 breakups a game.

-Smith is also a standout on special teams. He blocked a punt in last year's UC/Syracuse game and has 6 blocked punts in his career. Syracuse blocked 2 kicks at Pitt last week with Smith getting one. Smith also got an interception and returned it 73 yards last week.

-Corey Smith continues to lead the Bearcat defense in tackles with 52, but Haruki Nakamura is right behind with 50 tackles.

-The Bearcats are -2 in turnovers. Syracuse is -1.

-Syracuse is ranked 113th in total offense.

-Damien Rhodes has moved into 11th place on the Syracuse all time rushing list. Joe Morris heads the list with over 4,000 yards. Other notable Top 10 rushers are Larry Csonka (3), Floyd Little (5), and Ernie Davis (9). Rhodes needs only 56 yards Saturday to get into the Top 10. Jim Brown is #15 on the list.

-Dustin Grutza's completion percentage has dipped to 51.5%.

-Saturday will be Parent's Weekend and Fan Appreciation Weekend at Syracuse.

-Sirius radio will broadcast the game on channel 147.

-The Syracuse Carrier Dome opened in 1980. The Orange beat Miami, Oh and played before the largest crowd to date of 50,564 fans.

-Syracuse ought to be known as "The Cradle of Announcers." Syracuse broadcasting alums include Bob Costas, Mike Tirico, Sean McDonough, Len Berman, Marv Albert, Ian Eagle, Dick Stockton and our own Dan Hoard.

-Syracuse has a 2 hour pre-game radio show.

-Syracuse starts 5 seniors on offense and 6 seniors on defense.

-The Syracuse offensive line coach is Bob Wylie. He served as the Bearcat O-line coach for Rick Minter in 1996.

-Jim Kelly Jr. will be the Bearcats' honorary captain this week.

-John Barker was 1-3 in field goal attempts last week for the ‘Cuse with misses from 39 and 43 yards. His only successful kick was from 32 yards out.
