Bearcats Offer Ohio Sleeper

Last year at this time, the Cincinnati Bearcats staff made a play for a speed demon from Youngstown. This year mark Dantonio and his staff appear to be high on a Cleveland area player who is very similar to Derrick Stewart.

Over the past few weeks one name has risen to the top of the sleeper list in Ohio. Don't look now because this sleeper is waking up and schools are taking notice. P.J. Mahone a safety/wide receiver prospect from Elyria High has played a key role in leading his team to a second round playoff match-up this weekend against Canton McKinley.

Mahone, 5-foot-11, 190 pounds, has carried the ball 134 times for 1,374 yards and 20 touchdowns. He has also caught 34 passes for 778 yards and six touchdowns. As good as Mahone is on offense he's a fairly solid defensive player as well. He has registered 81 tackles, four interceptions, two forced fumbles, and he has recovered one fumble and returned it for a touchdown.

"I think I'd probably be better as a safety, but I can do either," Mahone said. "I can cover well and support the run. I love to hit."

Mahone has received offers from Kent State, Ohio, Miami (Ohio) Bowling Green, and Cincinnati. He has attended games at Bowling Green and Ohio, but will wait to schedule his visits.

"I'll wait until after the season to schedule them."

The fleet footed athlete camped at Miami (Ohio), Bowling Green, and Ohio State this summer. Soon after, the offers started coming in.

"Bowling Green offered at camp. Miami offered soon after. I thought I did pretty well at Ohio State as a wide receiver. Cincinnati just offered not long ago." Iowa came to Elyria last week to check out Mahone at school. West Virginia and Minnesota have been in contact recently as well.
