Bearcats Left Out In The Cold

The Bearcats Volleyball Team ended a great season on Saturday. With a victory over Kentucky, the Bearcats earned their 20th victory on the season. Would it be enough to earn a NCAA berth? They found out on Sunday.

Despite a 20-12 record for the season (9-5 Big East), Coach Reed Sunahara saw his teams hopes of making a trip to the NCAA Tournament come up short. Ending the season in Kentucky, the Bearcats earned their 11th straight 20-win season by defeating the Wildcats 30-27, 24-30, 30-25, 30-24 on Saturday.

The Wildcats, who would earn a NCAA berth with a 17-11 record, were handled by the Bearcats before the selection committee made their selection.

With hope remaining for a berth, the only teams to come out of the Big East were Notre Dame and Louisville. The Irish defeated the Bearcats in the Semifinal round of the Big East Championships before winning the title by defeating Louisville.

Some teams who earned berths with records under the Bearcats were Alabama A&M (15-11), Kansas (15-14), UCLA (18-10), Kentucky (17-11), Nevada (18-12), Texas State (17-14), Texas A&M (16-13), Colorado (15-12) and Loyola, Ill (13-17) to name a few.

Some teams with poorer records earned automatic bids. The Big 12 led all conferences with seven teams (Kansas 15-14) being the surprise pick. The Big Ten, Pac-10 and SEC all landed six teams each. The Big East saw three teams with 20 or more wins left home (Syracuse 25-10, St. John's 23-9 and Cincinnati 20-12).

Bearcat Insider would like to congratulate Coach Sunahara, his staff and players for a great season.
