Bearcats Roll Snake Eyes Against Flyers

The Bearcats pulled off the twin killing with two victories over the Dayton Flyers in Basketball. First the Women's team won in Dayton, then the Men's team picked up another victory in Vegas at a Holiday Tournament.

At least that is how the University of Dayton should feel today after having both the Bearcats Women and Men's team defeat their beloved Flyers.

First up were the women at UD Arena on Thursday afternoon. The Treasure chest has been full all season long as Treasure Humphries has been a major spark for Coach Laurie Pirtle's Bearcats. In moving their record to 9-1, the Bearcats are off to a great start and seeing contributions from several players along the way towards their opener in the Big East.

Pressure defense and timely shooting were the keys to a 65-55 victory. Humphries scored 21 points and watched as three Flyers would score in double figures on the day. The Bearcats found scoring from seven other members to pick up where Humphries left off. Freshman Shelly Bellman would pull down eight rebounds while Jill and Anne Stephens both scored nine points apiece. The Bearcats forced Dayton into 17 turnovers in the victory.

But while the women were in the comforts of Ohio, the men were out west getting ready to battle in a holiday tournament in a high school gym.

Having suffered a loss to the Flyers just a few weeks ago, Bearcat fans waited to learn if the Bearcats were off that night or if the program had fallen so far that losses to Dayton should be expected. The later was soon discarded like a bad hand at a Vegas poker table.

Coach Andy Kennedy looked towards his Freshman/Senior combo of Devan Downey and James White to power his team in the 81-63 victory in this third game of the Las Vegas Holiday Classic.

Downey would hit 7-of-13 from the field while White was 6-of-13. The game itself saw both teams battle for almost all of the 200 minutes in the game. But with just under eight minutes left in the game the Flyers lost the ability to stop the Bearcats or hit any shots from the field. When the buzzer sounded the Bearcats had pulled off a great victory and scored 22 points while giving up only 5 to the Flyers.

Five Bearcats would hit for double figures while only Brian Roberts would hit double-digit status on the night. Playing tough defense forced the Flyers into 20 turnovers while the Bearcats did a great job of protecting the basketball giving it up only 7 times in the contest.
