Bearcats Drop Big East Opener

In the first of many test in the Big East, Coach Laurie Pirtle and her team started fast only to fall in the end to one of the powers in Women's Basketball.

Going into Tuesday night's battle with ranked Rutgers, University of Cincinnati Women's Basketball Coach Laurie Pirtle knew her team would have to play a perfect game to have a chance at earning a victory. The Scarlet Knights already owned a Big East victory, and would have a perfect record if not for a slip against Mississippi in mid December.

The first half saw the young Bearcats hang tough with the favorite to win the Big East. Led by Anne Stephens (17 pts.), the team many felt would struggle earned an early halftime lead 33-28. But the Knights showed their strength with a 17-5 run that gave them a 56-45 advantage with just over six minutes left in the game.

The great shooting performance in the first half was shutdown by the Knights in the second as the Bearcats could only hit on 25% of their shots from the field. In the end Rutgers had too much firepower for the team many feel will surprise some in Big East play.

Along with Stephens, Michelle Jones would hit for 10 points and 6 rebounds. Rutgers was paced by Michelle Campbell with 21 points and Cappie Pondexter with 16. The Bearcats will travel and Providence on Saturday afternoon.
