What Bearcat Insider reported early in January is now official, Freddie Lenix is now a Bearcat football player. While signing day is set to begin in just a few hours, the official release was handed out tonight by the university on Lenix.
Here is the official release from the University of Cincinnati Sports Information Department.
CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Freddie Lenix, a former standout athlete at Cleveland (Ohio) Glenville High, has joined the list of University of Cincinnati football early signees.
The 6-foot, 215-pound linebacker enrolled at UC for Winter quarter and is working out with the team in the winter conditioning program.
Lenix, who led Glenville High to the regional finals of the 2004 Ohio Division I state playoffs, originally committed to Ohio State in 2005, but did not enroll at OSU last fall. He will be eligible to compete for the Bearcats this fall.
Lenix becomes the third member of the 2006 recruiting class to begin his Bearcat career this quarter. UC previously signed offensive linemen Mario Duenas and Ken Rodriguez in December, and both arrived at UC at the start of the quarter.
UC will announce its signees to next year's freshman class on Wednesday.
Lenix was named the Greater Cleveland area Athlete of the Year by the Cleveland Plain Dealer last year. In addtion to his football performance, which included 142 tackles and 12 sacks, he led Glenville to the Ohio Class AAA state track and field championship. He was a member of the school's winning 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams and finished fourth in the 100 meters at the state meet.
