The Bearcats and Panthers battled to a 64-63 Panther win on February 4th in Fifth Third Arena. Coach Laurie Pirtle will look for her young team to play like the veterans they've become in their first Big East Tournament. But will the rematch be as close as the first match-up?
The Bearcats are coming off a 4-5 record in February with victories over Seton Hall, West Virginia, Louisville and Georgetown. Only West Virginia and Louisville made the tournament from this group and will match-up in the first round against each other.
If the Bearcats hope to advance they will need to stop Panthers center Marcedes Walker who scored 13 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in there last meeting. For the Bearcats, Treasure Humphries will need to continue her level of play and one of the freshmen will need to step up and have a big contest as well.
But if the Bearcats advance, DePaul will be waiting on Sunday night and the winner of that contest would take on the winner of the Connecticut vs. USF/Notre Dame game on Monday night for a chance to advance to the Championship game on Tuesday night.
Making the tournament in their first season in the Big East with such a young team is a great accomplishment for Coach Pirtle and her staff. All five of the former C-USA members made the conference tournament in their first year. DePaul finished the highest out of all the new members with an 11-5 Big East record and a 24-5 overall mark.
Rutgers won their second straight Big East crown and holds the number one seed for the tournament.
