As Bearcat fans have learned over the previous few hours, the University of Cincinnati wasted little time in naming Mick Cronin as it's Men's Basketball Coach following the Bearcats loss to South Carolina in the NIT.
Cronin, no stranger to the Bearcats program or the Queen City, is a LaSalle High School graduate and comes from a coaching family. Over the years he's used his great communication skills in recruiting some of the top classes in college basketball while an assistant coach for two legends of the game.
One of his former bosses is current Louisville Head Coach Rick Pitino who leaves no doubt about the job Cronin did while at U of L. "Mick is a relentless recruiter and he communicates with the players as well as any coach I've ever worked with." Not bad praise from one of the top coaches in the college game.
But Cronin also knows Bearcats basketball having earned his B.A. in History from the University of Cincinnati and working for former coach Bob Huggins from 1996-2001 before heading to Louisville. After just three seasons at Louisville, Cronin was tapped as the head coach for the Murray State Racers.
At 34 years of age, Cronin will have the energy needed to keep the Bearcats program at the level it's fans have come to enjoy. With two NCAA Tournament appearances in his three years at Murray State, it shouldn't be long before the Bearcats make their return to the Big Dance in the coming years.
As is being stated by many sources, it's his work in the field of recruiting that should make the Bearcat faithful very excited.
As the key recruiter for Bob Huggins, Cronin brought in a "Who's Who" of Bearcat greats. But while fans can be excited about this hire, Cronin knows there is work that needs to be done and one area he will need help in is fan support.
As proven this season and over the course of many others, the Bearcat faithful are a key part to the success of it's basketball program. The crowds that fill Fifth Third Arena during the season gives the Bearcats a sixth man when the game is on the line.
At some point on Friday, Mick Cronin will be officially given the keys to the Bearcats basketball program. It's now his baby and the future is looking bright.
