News & Notes - Practice #9

Who got decleated? Who was running with the number 1's? Bearcat Insider has the latest report from the Bearcats spring practice in today's "News & Notes".

-The Bearcats returned to practice today (Tuesday) for the first time since Saturday's scrimmage.

-Dave Berk's brother Jeff attended today's practice. As many already know, Jeff was an offensive lineman at West Virginia. Bearcat offensive line coach Dan Roushar asked Jeff to speak with the O-line prior to practice about practicing with intensity.

-It was full gear today but not a lot of full contact.

-All of the injured from Saturday's scrimmage were at practice and in uniform, but all were limited with colored jerseys.

-Antoine Horton took Mike Mickens' spot with the #1 defense at cornerback.

-The #1 defense remained the same other than Horton. DL-Anderson, Byrd, Carvitti, Hoke. LB-Williams, Carpenter, Manalac. DB-Bowie, Nakamura, Ross, Horton.

-The #1 O-line was again Bujnoch, Straub, Reinstatler, Canfield, and Simon.

-The focus today seemed to be on special teams and other situations like the 2 minute drill, creating fumbles, etc. I thought the overall energy level in practice was really down. It was warmer than usual today, and the players may be getting a case of tired legs.

-Three of the four top cornerbacks are in colored jerseys (Horton, Mickens, and Gilyard).

-Grutza continued to get the first reps, but I thought Davila threw the ball better today. There were no interceptions.

-The novice centers (Reinstatler and Duenas) continued the learning pains with the QB/Center exchange. Chris Flores was in gear but was held out of almost all drills. Reinstatler had one fumble on the exchange and one bad snap in the shotgun. Duenas had two problems with the exchange.

-Mike Mickens got Leo Morgan with a "decleater" block in the punting drill. Morgan apparently didn't see Mickens coming and was sent flying. Leo took it well.

-The #2 defense started out with Nelms, Claggett, Hoppel and McKenzie on the D-line; Morgan, McCullough, Ferguson at LB; and Mickens, Hall, B. Jones, and Gilyard at DB.

-The #2 O-line was Linkenbach, Rodriguez, Duenas, Tobin and Bolton. El-Amin was also getting reps.

-Wess seemed to be getting some work at receiver today.

-Greg Moore had his first fumble of the spring today. It came on a kickoff return.

-Marcus Waugh is looking closer and closer to being ready. He's still in a green jersey, but he's really starting to showing his blocking skills. He did a nice job with Nelms today on a block near the goalline.

-The offense wore the black jerseys today after winning Saturday's scrimmage in one of those weird scoring deals.

-The defense always does up/downs at the conclusion of practice. The entire defense does them together, and the number is determined by mistakes made by the entire defensive personnel. Trevor Anderson really struggled to finish today. Conversely, Anthony Hoke showed remarkable zeal.

-Spoke with Ryan Manalac after practice and will have a story later.
