Breakdown 2006: Running Backs

The Bearcats have a full load of running backs headed into the 2006 season. Who will be the main back and who will be fighting for carries? We breakdown those who return and also look at the three freshmen who will take the field this fall.

The only position to get more attention then running back is quarterback for the University of Cincinnati Football program. The Bearcats see the cupboard is loaded with talent for the 2006 season and for seasons to come. Who will get the majority of the carries? Who will be the most productive as the Bearcats head into their second season of Big East play? We take a look in this breakdown of the Bearcats running backs.

Last year didn't see a 1,000 yard rusher or one even close enough to brag about, but with three backs fighting for carries and struggles along the offensive line, did you really expect there to be one? But while we can look at the negatives from last season there are many positives to look at when talking about the running back position for the University of Cincinnati football team. Let's look at each of the players fighting to earn the starting nod against Eastern Kentucky this fall.

Returning From The 2005 Season

Butler Benton

Mike Daniels

Bradley Glatthaar

Greg Moore

New For 2006

Robby Armstrong

John Goebel

Jacob Ramsey

When the Bearcats open Camp Higher Ground in August they will be loaded at the running back position. Four players return with major experience while three newcomers will fight to see who will stay on the offensive side of the ball.

As for who will do what in 2006 here is my breakdown on each player starting with senior Mike Daniels.

Mike Daniels

Senior

Cincinnati, Oh

Daniels has yet to see the success he enjoyed as a prep star at Princeton High School. While many felt his height would cause him problems in the college game, it's seems more like his main problem is not being able to create on the fly as he did in high school. Daniels is one of those players who adjusted slowly to the coaching change a few years ago but has seemed to come around after a rough start. He's still got skills that can cause problems but has not seen his chances rise as others have come and performed above him.

Speed is his game and being able to create on the fly makes him a game changing threat, but at this time he's not seen the success he enjoyed as a freshman. Mike knows this is his last chance and is willing to do whatever the coaching staff wants him to. A move to receiver during the spring could be fulltime by the time camp opens, but also look for him to lineup in special situations when needed.

Strengths: Mike is one of those players who can make players look silly. But as a college player he's learned there is a difference in size and speed from high school and hasn't been able to use his biggest weapon, speed, to make big plays for the Bearcats. A multi-purpose player who can also make things happen on special teams, Daniels will not get many carries but can be used in passing situations to create match-up problems.

Weakness: Mike needs to put the mental part of his game into full gear for his senior season. Over the past two seasons he's seen chances to make big plays fail as he's allowed mental lapses come into play. These have included falling down or not catching passes right to him as well as protecting the football.

What Do I Expect From Mike Daniels: I expect to see Mike leave it all on the line for his senior season. He's a great kid I've had the pleasure of knowing for several years and I know he's got talent. The biggest question will come in camp as more players will be on the roster fighting for reps. If the staff keeps him with the receivers he'll also have a tough fight on his hands. But the kid who won games for Princeton all by himself just a few years ago may have a few tricks up his sleeve before his Bearcat career is finished.

Butler Benton

Junior

Detroit, Mich

Butler enjoyed a great freshman campaign and looked to be a breakout back for the Bearcats. But things didn't go that way and Benton had to share carries with two other backs during the season. Spring brought him many reps as others were sidelined with various injuries or setbacks and Benton took full advantage of his time.

Strengths: Benton has many with his size, speed and strength. Tough enough to run up the middle, Benton excels taking the ball outside and cutting off the corner. Has seen his vision and ball carrying skills improve each season.

Weakness: Benton has seen injury slow his progress early. While he doesn't have many weaknesses he's still learning and working on his overall game. Spring helped him take the next step needed to further his college career.

What Do I Expect From Butler Benton: A super season fighting for the starting job against Bradley Glatthaar and Greg Moore. Will Benton reach the 1,000 yard status? Sharing the workload will hurt his chances but he should enjoy his best season as a Bearcat to date. Look for Benton to come into camp ready and willing to throw his body into the mix and get his fair share of the work.

Bradley Glatthaar

Junior

Cincinnati, Oh

I've been a fan of Glatthaar since his high school days at Elder. Having the best vision of the Bearcats running backs makes Glatthaar a solid back that will gain yards without fans really taking much notice. While he's not a speed demon he's still able to break-off a big run as he showed last season. But it's the ability to pick his holes and get the hard fought yards that makes him the back the staff keeps going to. It also helps he's got a great work ethic. But Glatthaar missed spring practice and will see some serious challenges for the starting position when he returns.

Strengths: Vision, patience, toughness set Glatthaar apart from the other backs in the program. Many question his speed but I keep telling people you don't need to be a speed back to gain 1,000 yards. For several years I watched as slower backs from West Virginia with great vision enjoyed great success.

Weakness: Speed and the ability to hit the outside corner are the only areas Glatthaar shows weakness in. I along with others have questioned if the Bearcats wouldn't be better off running a two-back set with Glatthaar and one of the other backs instead of a fullback.

What Do I Expect From Bradley Glatthaar: I expect him to be himself and continue to do the things that have brought him success since his high school career. The Bearcats backfield is loaded and Glatthaar will have to fight off at least two other backs for carries. But he'll do it and get the most out of his abilities and make very few mistakes.

Greg Moore

Junior

Trotwood, Oh

Moore is the player who can least afford to take any steps back at this point in his career. Several coaches have expressed he's got the body and skills to play at the next level but has yet to put the full package together. Size, speed and cutback ability make Moore dangerous, but his pension for mistakes also make him a liability in the crunch.

Strengths: NFL body and potential waiting to explode at anytime makes Moore the player Bearcat fans yell for to get more carries. He's got the size and athletic ability to star on any team in the county and be a high draft choice.

Weakness: Football is not only physical but very mental for players at the highest level. Moore has yet to show the ability to keep from making mental mistakes when called upon. Last season was a prime example when Moore was the workhorse back against Louisville until it was time to punch the ball into the end zone. The Bearcats coaching staff then went to another back to finish the job worried about Moore making a mistake and fumble away points. If he can overcome this weakness he's the back that will set the mark for the rest of those fighting for playing time.

What Do I Expect From Greg Moore: Improvement with less mental mistakes is what I expect from Moore. This spring he got off to a slow start because of an illness and missed on a great chance to set himself apart. If he comes into camp with a mindset of doing what is asked he'll be an All-Big East performer. I expect to see Moore be given the chance to be the man this fall.

NEW FOR 2006

The Bearcats will welcome three new backs to the mix when camp opens. Will any of them be given the chance to earn major playing time or will they be set for a redshirt season as the Bearcats have great depth. Here's a look at the three newcomers to the Bearcats program.

Robby Armstrong

Freshman

Murraysville, Pa.

Armstrong will enter looking to fight off the injury bug that's slowed him during his high school career. He's got the size and athletic ability to be a solid running back but if he's to see much playing time this fall I'd expect to see it on special teams. Has surprising speed and could also see a move to the defensive side of the football at some point if he doesn't get the reps at running back.

John Goebel

Freshman

Milford, Mich

Goebel will enter camp just like Armstrong as an underdog to get many carries during his freshman season. With a strong work ethic and the desire to excel don't bet against Goebel one day getting major reps at running back, but he's also a very good athlete who the staff could look at moving to the defensive side of the ball if needed.

Jacob Ramsey

Freshman

Columbus, Oh.

Ramsey enters with much excitement from Bearcat fans. Considered by many to be a workhorse back you can build around, Ramsey is no different then his freshman running-mates when it comes to the number of carries he may receive. But while he's athletic enough to also see a move to defense I don't expect to see it happen anytime soon. If he's to see the field this fall he'll do so on special teams or if an injury would sideline one of the main backs for a long period. Giving Ramsey a redshirt would be a move I could see without much thought. This would then give him some space from the Bearcats three main backs for this season.

Final Notes

The Bearcats will have three backs to look towards this fall and shouldn't need to look into their freshman class for help. The biggest question for the staff will be if they redshirt all three or use them to upgrade special teams. If one of the freshmen can set himself apart from the rest don't be surprised to see him get some carries. But the main focus for the staff is the three main backs that return. One thing we know is the back with the hot hand will carry the ball until he's shows he can't do it anymore.

All three backs have the talent to start and excel at the college level but could see breakout years slowed if the offensive line doesn't develop early. While I feel Bradley Glatthaar will continue to see major carries he's going to be pushed by Moore and Benton. For many backs having to fight for carries with two other backs would create problems, it should be stated I've never seen any of the three have a problem with the other. This is a credit to not only the players but also the coaching staff as they've made the hard call on who gets the majority of carries. But at some point one or two of the backs will have to take the next step and become the main back for the offense to rally around.

The Bearcats run a 50/50 offense using several formations with tight ends playing a large part in the blocking schemes. With this style of offense you expect to see the running game blossom with at least one back getting 1,000 yards. Because of the lack of experience along the offensive line I can't say we'll see a 1,000 yard back this fall, but I do expect one of the back to be close.
