Behind The Scenes With UC Football Part 2

Have you ever wondered what it's like traveling with a college football team? Well I hope I can give you some insight what it's like to be part of the University of Cincinnati Bearcats during their latest road trip to Blacksburg, Virginia to play the Virginia Tech Hokies. This is Part Two of our special look behind the scenes.

Game Day 55-Minutes Until Kickoff

Kickers will be the first to take the field followed by quarterbacks, centers and long-snappers.  Within the next five minutes all specialists will be on the turf preparing for the game at hand.

Game Day 35-Mintues Until Kickoff

By now the whole team is dressed and ready to take the field.  The work here may go unnoticed to many but is a key ingredient in getting the small parts of each game going in the right direction.  Coaches use this time to get players charged up and make sure those who may have special duties recall the fine details.  The first hits come here as players get themselves ready to battle the days opponent.  Game faces are on and players start to get that extra bounce in their step knowing it's time to get to work.

Game Day 15-Mintues Until Kickoff

The team leaves the field and heads off to the locker room for last minute instruction and a talk from their leader Bearcats head coach Mark Dantonio.  They will next appear as a team ready to battle this week's tough opponent and #10 ranked Virginia Tech.

Game Day 5-Mintues Until Kickoff

The Bearcats head out of the tunnel and you can sense it's time to battle.  Players and coaches have that extra bounce to their step and Coach Dantonio is in full throttle game mode.  Not wanting to be shortchanged, Coach Dantonio notices something about the way the Tech band is on the field, he makes sure the game official standing next to him understands he's there for business and will not accept any funny business.

The crowd is building as both teams wait for the call.  The Tech fans erupt as their team takes the field followed by the Bearcats.  Seated just above the Bearcats exit is a group of die-hard UC supporters.  They make sure their beloved Bearcats know they have support in Lane Stadium on this day.

The crowd is the loudest the Bearcats have heard all season.  While only numbering above 65,000, this crowd knows how to make the 105,000 from the previous weeks match-up against Ohio State sound like a church service.  They expect their Hokies to destroy the Bearcats and let the Bearcats know as much.

It's now that both teams have their captains take the field for the coin toss.  As done in previous game home and away, Coach Dantonio has a special captain on hand from the Bearcats past.  This game saw 4-time letter winner Brad Jackson take the field with the Bearcats.  While most times these special captains only stand and enjoy the experience you could see Brad was ready to take an active role.  Jackson, who played in two Super Bowls and has a Championship ring as a member of the Baltimore Ravens expressed himself throughout the game and was part of sideline huddles.

The toss is done and now it's time to strap on the helmets and get to action.  The Bearcats will start on offense and look to make an early statement.

Kickoff

While you already know the outcome of the game I still want to give you the feel of what it's like to be on the sidelines as well as in the stands during such a contest.  The feeling in the air is a special one and one that can leave those who've never experienced it before speechless.  While you don't hear a single fan talking, you hear the crowd as a group.  After awhile the loudness of the game fades and while fans are still yelling just as loud as they did before the game started you get use to it and filter it out.  This game day crowd expected a blow-out and when things didn't go the way they thought they would expressed their concerns.

No different then Bearcat fans, Hokie fans were talking at halftime about the lack of quality along their offensive line and the poor play of their quarterback.  They couldn't understand how this team with only one win and players smaller in size was not only hanging with their team but beating them.  Some spoke of being ranked too high while others defended the team by asking if they saw the Bearcats play Ohio State the previous week. As one fan said "Cincinnati is not Duke".

By any means the Bearcats earned the respect of the Hokie fans on this day and gave them a scare late into the contest.

Game Over

Head coaches meet at midfield to shake hands and wish each other the best.  Players greet each other after having battled for the past few hours and tell each other how good they were.  Assistant coaches on the field know there is work to be done and show their emotions on their sleeves.  For the coaches upstairs in the press box the walk to the locker room seems like it takes forever.  The game still fresh in their minds you can hear a needle drop as they walk past those who look on.  But while the game is over there is still much work to be done and a schedule to keep before the team can return home to Cincinnati.

On this day the Bearcats come up short of getting their second victory of the season.  As players and coaches leave the field you see and feel the pain of knowing they should have won this game.  There are no moral victories for Bearcats head coach Mark Dantonio his staff or their players.  They expect to compete with any team in the country and put together a game plan to do so.

Work Still To Do

The University of Cincinnati Sports Information office is now doing their part.  Media is taken to a private room where players and Coach Dantonio are brought for final comments on the game.  Head Coach Mark Dantonio will first sit down with radio analyst Jim Kelly for a short interview before speaking with other media outlets.  On this day there is only Bill Koch (Cincinnati Enquirer) and another beat writer along with Bearcat Insider on hand.  Tom Hathaway and new football SID Kelby Siler make sure members of the media get all the quotes needed to meet their deadlines. They also make sure coach and players have time to shower and get on the team bus for the teams return to Cincinnati.  It's a fine dance but one done without a hitch.

While the media is getting their information players are showering and getting ready for the bus ride back home.  The athletic training staff headed by Bill Walker and Bob Mangine along with the medical staff of Dr. Stephens, Dr. Colosimo and Dr. Ellis do their part if needed to make sure any injuries or other medical issues are addressed on the spot.  This is huge and can be the difference in a player receiving the needed treatment to help them be ready for the following weeks contest.

The equipment staff is also hard at work packing and loading the team's semi-trailer for the return trip to Cincinnati.  This is done is such a timely fashion that the truck will leave the same time the teams does.  Again the leadership and knowledge of Jeff Hericks plays a big role in making this a smooth return.  Keep in mind Jeff and the student managers still will have to unload the trailer upon their return.

For all the players and staff a meal is handed out as they exit the stadium and head for the bus trip home.  Players and coaches talk with family members who came to the game one final time and say their goodbyes.  Coach Dantonio has addressed the players after the game and now will take this time to address those members of the cheerleaders and support staff.  He thanks them for their effort and reminds them they will be needed as the Bearcats prepare to bring the Victory Bell back home to the campus of Cincinnati next weekend.  This is a team effort of not only players and coaches but of each person who plays an active role on game day.  The love and support is appreciated and returned with words of encouragement to the Bearcats leader.  It is here you get the feeling of being part of the Bearcats football family.  Each person is given respect and their due for the work he or she has performed.  No one is left out and the feeling of unity grows between those who've made the journey.

For players the ride home is one of reflection of the game just passed.  Great plays are short lived and memories of those plays that didn't go the right way are relived in their minds.  For this is the time players will judge themselves and assign blame for the days loss to their personal performance.  While not one play makes a team lose a game, players are a special breed who attacks their own mental state and self torture themselves into believing they were the reasons for the team's failure.  Victory brings celebration as a whole while defeat brings solace into one's self.  College football can be a cruel twelve game season with no time between games for reflection.

While fans are still in the parking lot enjoying the spoils of victory or the agony of defeat the Bearcats motorcade rolls towards home and thoughts of what lies ahead.  It's Miami week now but the work for Virginia Tech has not been complete yet.

Road Home

The Bearcats motorcade rolls down the back country roads of Virginia toward West Virginia.  After reaching West Virginia they learn a new route must be taken to ensure the team reaches home on schedule.  A major road closer cause this detour and fast thinking upon the bus drivers have a new route planned without much thinking.  Not only is the team on a fine schedule but also the buses themselves.  For the drivers they must unload at UC and head off to the airport to hand off the buses for another road trip on Sunday.  The drivers enjoy their time with the Bearcats.  Each is give a UC logo hat along with tickets to the game.  They've become part of the Bearcat family on this trip and many will see the team again in a few weeks.

Some people asked why the team chose to make such a long trip by bus instead of flying.  The fact Virginia Tech is out by itself is the main reason for the bus trip.  If the team would have flown they would have only saved a little over an hour of time.  The savings of using the buses totaled over $80,000 and allowed the program to purchase other items of need.

The team would stop once on the return trip to Cincinnati.  The rest area across from the one used on Friday would see the Bearcats take a few minutes to stretch and use the restroom.  Another meal would be handed out to players and support staff and the journey would be coming to an end in just a few more hours.

Home At Last

The Bearcats arrive back home from their trip to Southern Virginia.  No fanfare awaits them in the darkness of campus.  The sound of music from dorm rooms can be heard and a few students are walking around campus headed to their rooms or to parties.  The day started over fifteen hours before and there's no rest for the weary.  Equipment must be unloaded tonight with the majority being unloaded on Sunday.  Players and coaches will return to work in 15 hours for unit meetings and to view the Virginia Tech film.  Everyone will turn in their travel sweats and players will have a team lift/run later in the afternoon.  By 5:00 study table opens and players use the time to catch up on the studies from the travel.

Time To Start Work On The Next Game

It's the start of another game week and while each week of the college football season is special, this week's opponent creates a bigger stir as longtime rival Miami will head into Nippert Stadium next Saturday afternoon for a 3:30 kickoff.  At stake is the Victory Bell and bragging rights for the next year.  The Bearcats and their head coach know this is an important game.

Final Thoughts

While I've been around college football for several years I've never had the chance to see up close all the work that goes into a single game.  While players and coaches are given the chance to be seen by fans the support staff that makes the game possible goes by unnoticed.  While these people may not be known by those who are the biggest fans of the Bearcats program I've learned they are appreciated by the players and coaching staff deeply.  As Bearcats head coach Mark Dantonio put it, "They are just as big a part of the Bearcats football family as any coach or player".

I want to again thank the University of Cincinnati for allowing Bearcat Insider the chance to go behind the scenes and follow the Bearcats.  It was a very special trip and one I'll remember for a long time.  I want to thank head coach Mark Dantonio for allowing this trip to take place and allowing BCI the chance to see first hand the behind the scenes action of a Bearcats on a road trip.  I also would like to thank the following people for making me feel at home with the Bearcats.

John Widecan, Maria Gruber, Jeff Hericks, Bob Arkeilpane, Bill Walker, Tom Hathaway, Kelby Siler, Tim Swanger, Bob Mangine, Dave Warner, Mike Tressel, Mark Staten, Dan Roushar, Tim Hinton, Ted Gill, Harlon Barnett, Pat Narduzzi, Don Treadwell, Chris Newman, Adam Shorter, Lorenzo Guess, Nick Siatras and all of the players and support staff I came in contact with.

I also want to stress how much I enjoyed talking with several of the families of the Bearcats and for the help they've given me.  I won't go into naming names but you know who you are.

I hope this gives you an idea of what it's like when the Bearcats take to the road.  The trip was long but at the same time short.  Great things are ahead for this program under the direction of Mark Dantonio and I hope Bearcat fans can keep the faith will its being built.
