Recap Bearcats Victory Over NKU

Bearcat Insider's Casey Weldon starts his second season of following the Bearcats Men's Basketball program and files this "Recap" from the teams victory over NKU filled with team and player breakdowns.

Game Recap
The Bearcats dominated their opponents Friday night, manhandling NKU en route to an 87-41 victory. The Bearcats utilized their dominant speed and athleticism to implement the Mick Cronin all-out style of play against their D-II opponent.

Cincinnati not only used their superior speed and quickness on the offensive side of things but also on defense - which turned into their most potent form of offense. Cincinnati was most impressive in this style during the first half, where the 'Cats were able to hold their opponents to just two made field goals and, possibly more impressive, held the team to just 13 field-goal attempts. These numbers were made possible due to UC's in-your-face defensive styling which neutered many Norse possessions before they could get started.

The Bearcats had five of their six steals in the first half, and forced 17 of their 22 forced turnovers. In all, the Bearcats had 29 points from turnovers and 10 points on the break. Also, one must remember, this effort featured only eight of the team's 10 scholarship athletes. The team was not able to fully utilize its press due to a lack of bodies that Coach Cronin was willing to use, which was emphasized more fully by the fact the team had three players with four personal fouls.

In terms of the Bearcat offense, it was not just an up-and-down, full-court game for this young team. While they seemed most well-adjusted in the "non-set" sets, such as on the break, UC did impress at times while in their half-court offense. The important phrase to note is at times. While Cronin and his staff were thrilled with the passing ability of their team (20 assists) and their overall decision making on the court (13 turnovers), there were definitely instances where Coach looked like he wanted to pull his hair out. When the team was forced to run more of a traditional offensive set during the second half they accumulated eight turnovers. Also, while they had good shooting numbers overall, a lot of their looks came "easy" after doing all the hard work on defense in order to get out on the run so it is hard to say if the numbers were not more of a product of the team's collective hustle then an excellent team shooting ability.

Though I doubt anyone expects this team to shoot 60-percent (33-of-55) from the floor (47.1-percent (8-of-17) from three-point range) on the season. They should expect 61.9 (13-of-21) from the free-throw line as one number fans can expect to grow in the coming weeks.

Just NKU? (An NKU Apologist)
While many fans left Fifth Third Arena thrilled after last nights one-sided, Bearcat-dominated affair, there is quite assuredly half of the UC contingency - both fans and critics of the program - that will look at the result with one over-arching caveat that will undermine much of the "good" accomplished last night.

Many are sure to say, "This is NKU. You are supposed to do this to NKU if you are Cincinnati, or any D-I program." Even Mick Cronin echoed many of these sentiments in his post-game press conference... However, looking at this Norse squad as a simple D-II school is oversimplifying what this team really is. NKU features a team that has played together as a full unit since the summer months. Each member of the team played with their teammates during the Deveroes Summer League, against many of the Bearcats and other top D-I talent. (Division I teams can only assign two players to a summer league team). They have been playing as a cohesive unit for months, while UC has really only had the chance to come together for a few weeks now. In addition, while some will say that the Norse have numerous newcomers to their roster, three of them have Division I experience at the highest level. James Cripe (formerly of Dayton; dominated the 'Cats last year), Anthony Teague (New Mexico; outside specialist), and Stevan Wright (BGSU; versatile athlete with a knack for hitting big shots). The trio of former D-I players, as well as Kevin Schappel (the team's returning scoring leader) were held to just 22 points. All three of these guys had more experience playing against Division I teams then did the entire UC roster combined.

While this is not to say that NKU should have come in and dominate UC, this team was predicted by many to at least challenge the 'Cats, bringing them to within inches of losing one of their nine lives. Instead, the 'Cats went out and silenced many of their critics by the way they went about defeating NKU. While most expected a UC win, the margin by which they won (46) and the dominating first half (47-11) say a lot about this team. It could say a whole lot more after the Norse take on XU at the Cintas Center in the next few days.

Post-Halloween Scare for the 'Cats
While people in the Cincinnati did their trick-or-treating on Tuesday night, it seems like the holiday did not want to use all of its scares until Wednesday. Late in the second half of game Cedric McGowan went down with an apparent injury. Grabbing for his hamstring and limping/hopping off the court, visions of last year's injury-plagued season flashed before the eyes of many in attendance. However, McGowan was quick to recover from the apparent cramp and attempted to get back into the action. However, it seems like he re-aggravated the area just a few minutes later. While those in the media room were relieved to find out that McGowan was only suffering from a minor cramp, the collective breathe that the Bearcat faithful were forced to hold while waiting to hear the diagnosis suggests just how limited this team is right now. Unable to utilize their full-court press until they are at full-strength, when Adam Hrycaniuk and Hernol Hall return, this team is dangerously close to being drastically under-manned should anything happen to one of the Bearcats, particularly in the front court.

Halftime Speeches
Coach Cronin emphasized to his players that if "National Championships were won and lost by the first halves of basketball games" then his team at Murray State would have won it last season. Cronin realized how important it was for his team to stay hungry and to play with the passion they had that made them successful during that first half. If this team losses those basic killer instincts, those principles of hustle and out working their opponent, this could be a long season for the 'Cats. Cronin was very pleased with his team's effort for the duration of the game, even citing how his team dominated the "hustle board" (indicates tipped balls and overall hustle plays), the only scoring system he vowed to pay attention Wednesday night. What impressed Cronin most of all was the fact that his team outworked the under-dog, something that almost never happens.

The "Bearcat Way"
Cronin and his coaching staff were very pleased with the team's emphasis on principles of hard work and dominating defense, the cornerstones of Cincinnati basketball. John Williamson told me that the team knows very well what Cincinnati basketball is all about. Every player knew what to expect from a Bearcat team - and what fans expected to see from a UC basketball squad - before they ever stepped foot on campus. Hustle and hard work are two things you will not have to question about this year's squad.

Little Guys Living Large
Even though they were drastically undersized without the presence of their pair of 6-10ers, the Bearcats were able to dominant the Norse inside all game long. Ripping down 42 rebounds overall and 10 on the offensive end, while holding their opponents to just 19 total (five offensive), the Bearcats displayed that they could handle being smaller then their opponents. However, this is one aspect of the game that needs to have an asterisk thrown next to it. While NKU did feature a seven-footer in Cripe, he only played 13 minutes. While some of Cripe's lack of playing time was due to his ineffectiveness against the Bearcat defense, the primary reason for his being benched was that the Norse went to an air-it-out attack where they launched up three-point shots quickly in their possessions, especially during the second half. NKU hoisted 20 attempts from deep in the second twenty-minutes of actions and had only two free-throw attempts. After Cripe, NKU was even smaller then UC, occasionally running four guys no taller then 6-3 on the floor at one time. Cronin credits much of his team's dominance inside with the rare height advantage his team had and the obvious physical ability edge the Bearcats featured. Both Cronin and players like Cedric McGowan talked about how the team should have had more rebounds then they did and they have to rely more heavily on positioning over simply "jumping over people" like they did against NKU.

Beginners Luck?
UC played seven players (if you include walk-on Walter Lewis) who had never played for the Bearcats in an actual game situation before. For the most part, every single one of those players had a strong showing:

Marvin Gentry: Gentry displayed good athleticism and sold hustle in his 22 minutes of work. He scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including making three of his four shots from behind the arc. He also dished out a pair of assists and claimed two offensive rebounds, one of which went for a tip-in.

Timmy Crowell: Crowell was probably the quietest Bearcat on Wednesday night. However, being unassuming does not correlate to a lack of effectiveness. A true point guard, Crowell did all the "little" things a coach needs from a point guard. Crowell had two assists in 19 minutes, while only turning the ball over a single time. Also, while he scored only two points of his own and was credited for just two assists, Crowell helped to initiate the Bearcats up-tempo attack by collecting five defensive rebounds and quickly getting the ball up the floor and not making the careless pass/decision that would lead to point for the opponent.

Deonta Vaughn: Even though he is the only scholarship player on the Bearcats without any collegiate experience, Vaughn did not let that lack of an on-court history hinder his ability to be successful. Vaughn led the team in assists with seven and only turned the ball over one time. Showing his versatility, he also scored eight points, grabbed four rebounds (one offensive) and displayed a good shot selection. Coach Cronin describes his dynamic offensive weapon as "a player without a position, simply a 'guard.'" Vaughn showed the ability to play on the perimeter or take the ball of the dribble. He can play both on and off the ball, though he needs to work on his off-ball defense, according to the staff

Marcus Sikes: Sikes has "been here and done then" that before, as one of the only Bearcats with Division-I experience. Though his playing time was limited at Georgia before he decided to go the JUCO route, Sikes obviously learned a lot about playing at this level. While his numbers were not overly impressive, he did finish with four points and five rebounds. Despite standing just 6-8 and having seriously slimmed down to that he could adequately adapt to the power forward spot for UC, Sikes was thrust into the five-spot on Wednesday night to fill the void left by the lack of three expected 6-10 centers the team would have. Sikes did an admirable job on Cripe when he was in the game, as he scored just a single point after scoring the first two points of the game.

Jamual Warren: Warren continues to impress with his leadership and ability level. Going for 10 points on the game, Warren displayed a plethora of ways of scoring the ball he has in his repertoire. Showing his ability from deep, a quick first-step and the finesse game he posses to get in the lane, as well as the brute strength to get the ball up despite traffic, Warren is clearly a multi-dimensional offensive weapon for the 'Cats. With that being said, Warren's bag of tricks does not merely include though of a directly offensive nature. Much of Warren's offense came from his aggressiveness on defense. Finishing with a team-high three steals, Warren did a lot to create for himself by picking apart the defense and then turning it into transition/fast-break points. Warren also proved that he can lead the team, as he dished out four assists, which was good for second on the team.

John Williamson: The Bearcat Insider Player of the Game, Williamson did it all against the Norse. He appears to be the most complete player on the UC team, at least offensively. He displayed strength, quickness and the ability to create his own offense by going to the bucket on several occasions, as well as the ability to hit from deep (2-for-2) or get the difficult bucket on the low-block or on a tip-in. Williamson finished with a game-high 21 points but also a game-leading seven rebounds, including four offensive rebounds (a few of which were tip-backs). He also finished with two blocked shots and a steal. With the undersized lineup the 'Cats are forced to work with currently, Williamson will be thrust back into the power forward spot he played at Cincinnati State at times.

Veterans!
While it is odd calling anyone on this team a veteran, the Bearcats do have a duo of front-court players that have Big East and UC experience. Cedric McGowan and Ronald Allen returned to the court for the first game of their second and final year as Bearcats in dynamic fashion against NKU. McGowan was a POG all the way around. Despite coming down with a cramp that limited his action late in the contest, McGowan finished with 18 points and five rebounds. Adapting well to his small forward duties, he showed the aptitude from the perimeter he displayed at times last season and throughout the off season. McGowan also finished with three assists and led the team with his hustle and energy around the basket that made his a fan favorite last season.

Allen, who was seldom used last year despite his size and athletic ability, came out very aggressive in the exhibition opener. While he only played five minutes in the first half due to accumulating two quick fouls, Allen came up big in the second half. The well-traveled Allen played 19 minutes overall and scored 10 points. While he did turn the ball over twice, he helped to make up for it with five rebounds and a game-high three blocked shots.

Win one for the Mick-er
While he did not really think about it, the win over NKU was the first-ever (though it will not be counted) in Cronin's Bearcat career. Humbled by the job, Cronin simply emphasized how great this job has been for him since he took over the helm of the seemingly capsizing ship in March. Hopefully, this will be the first in a long line of wins for the Cronin-led Bearcats.

Late-Arriving Crowd Comes Through in the Clutch
It was great to see such a large crowd on Wednesday. There were reportedly 8, 089 fans at the contest, many of which were late-arriving fans. I know that as late as five minutes into the contest I was worried as to whether or not there would even be 5,000-plus fans in attendance. Not only were the fans physically present but they were there in spirit, too. Excited about the team and the onset of a new season, the crowd was energized for the entire 40 minutes of action, and largely stayed for the entirety of the game. This is in spite of a 46-point discrepancy on the scoreboard. Great job, fans!

"Run"-ons
While they are not likely to see a whole lot of time this season, especially if/when Hall and Hrycaniuk return (as well as Connor Barwin), the non-scholarship players (as Coach Cronin labels them) did a great job for the 'Cats and earned their playing time. Brandon Miller energized the crowd during his eight minutes of action. He finished with a rebound and an assist, but made his mark when he scored his only two points off a two-handed dunk late in the game. The dunk got everyone not wearing NKU gold and black off their seat. Lewis, a junior and first-year member of the team, scored his first point as a Bearcat in his first two minutes of his college basketball career. Lewis connected one of his two free-throw attempts.

It was great to see such a large crowd on \r\nWednesday. There were reportedly 8, 089 fans at the contest, many of which were \r\nlate-arriving fans. I know that as late as five minutes into the contest I was \r\nworried as to whether or not there would even be 5,000-plus fans in attendance. \r\nNot only were the fans physically present but they were there in spirit, too. \r\nExcited about the team and the onset of a new season, the crowd was energized \r\nfor the entire 40 minutes of action, and largely stayed for the entirety of the \r\ngame. This is in spite of a 46-point discrepancy on the scoreboard. Great job, \r\nfans!

\r\n

\"Run\"-ons
While they are not likely to see a whole lot \r\nof time this season, especially if/when Hall and Hrycaniuk return (as well as \r\nConnor Barwin), the non-scholarship players (as Coach Cronin labels them) did a \r\ngreat job for the 'Cats and earned their playing time. Brandon Miller energized \r\nthe crowd during his eight minutes of action. He finished with a rebound and an \r\nassist, but made his mark when he scored his only two points off a two-handed \r\ndunk late in the game. The dunk got everyone not wearing NKU gold and black off \r\ntheir seat. Lewis, a junior and first-year member of the team, scored his first \r\npoint as a Bearcat in his first two minutes of his college basketball career. \r\nLewis connected one of his two free-throw attempts.
