Women Victorious in Exhibition Opener

Coach Laurie Pirtle watched as her team destroyed DT3 in the Bearcats exhibition opener on Friday night at Fifth Third Arena. Casey Weldon was on hand and has a complete breakdown of the Bearcats performance along with some special audio interviews for our premium members.

Player of the Game:Treasure Humphries

The 5-6 senior combo guard from Canton, Ohio dominated the action early and often, going for 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting (1-of-2 from 3-point range) in the Bearcats exhibition opener against DT3, 103-77. Treasure, who played primarily at the point position last season, adapted well to playing off the ball, the position she has played naturally during her first three years at UC. An Allen Iverson-esque type player - not quite a point guard but is best when she has the ball in her hands - made the best of both worlds tonight, dishing off five assists and helping to mentor starting lead guard Carla Jacobs, who dazzled in her first collegiate experience.

While Humphries was stellar on offense, her defense also shone through. Humphries pulled down six of her team-high eight rebounds on the defensive end and also ripped off a steal, all of which helped initiated the fast-paced Bearcat offense head coach Laurie Pirtle likes to run. Humphries, when healthy, is the most Bearcat that shows the most aptitude when it comes to defending on the ball and jumping into passing lanes, which is proven by the fact she led the team in steals during both her freshman and junior season - the two seasons she was actually healthy. Treasure uses her natural nose for the ball, her understanding of the game, and her dazzling open-court game to not only turn the opposing team over but also turn it into point for her team.

Stat of the Night
The Bearcats were 15-of-26 from behind the arc on Friday night, a total that would have been good for the most ever in school history. However, because this was an exhibition game the statistic cannot be used to supplant the school record of 12 3-pointers hit, a feat established twice (most recently; 3/5/04 vs Houston). The team saw seven 'Cats connect on trey attempts - five of which hit multiple - and eight attempted from behind the arc. UC was led from the perimeter by the trio (not an intentional play on words) of
Shelly Bellman (3-of-5), Angel Morgan (3-of-4) and Karen Twehues (3-of-6). Freshman Stephanie Stevens hit both of her attempts from range, which happened to be the first two of her young career. Showing vast improvement from last season, Morgan connected on more 3-pointers tonight then she did all of last season (2-of-9).

Cincinnati was particularly on fire during the first half, where the team nearly took down the single-game mark after hitting 11 of the 18 bombs they attempted. The three-point barrage helped lead to a 61-point first-half output. During that half, particularly the first 15 minutes of action, the Bearcats could seemingly do no wrong.

Young Guns Come Out Firing
UC's trio of freshman all played well during the time they were on the court. Jacobs led the onslaught of 18-year olds against a team full of grown women (ranging from 23 to 28 years of age). Jacobs finished with 13 points and dished out a game-high seven assists in her first appearance on the Fifth Third floor. Efficient in her efforts, Jacobs was 5-of-7 from the floor and connected on 2-of-3 of her three pointers, never taking a bad shot or truly forcing her offense. Jacobs received great praise from both her mentor, Humphries, and her head coach, who likened her to a young
Micah Harvey -last season's unquestioned team leader - in how she commanded respect on the floor. While Jacobs did have four turnovers, the coaching staff and fellow teammates give much of the responsibility of those mishaps to the up-tempo style of play the Bearcats run and it being the first time out.

Also playing well in the backcourt was Stevens, who played only eight minutes but connected on a pair of shots from deep and seemed to feel comfortable with the ball in her hands. Stevens, who seems to have struggled to adapt to the college game during practice, played very well overall and seemed apt at playing with or without the ball in her hands. While she did commit two turnovers, it looked like at least one of those turnovers came off her slipping and the other could be accredited to her youth and/or the team playing in its first game. Natasha Graboski, the lone freshman front-court player for the Bearcats, scored her first career point after connecting on one of her two free-throw attempts late in the contest.

Instant Offense
Karen Twehues continues to provide instant offense for a defensive-minded
University of Cincinnati attack. UC's fourth all-time leading three-point shooter (135 made-threes) and single-season percentage leader (.444 last season) hit on four of her eight shots, three of which (3-of-6) came from behind the arc. After adding three free throws to her tally, Twehues finished with 14 points to lead all Bearcat "bigs." The Swiss Miss will be a key asset for the Bearcats this season as she brings guard-like skills along with a 6-foot frame. Able to play the power forward or either wing position, Twehues will prove to be an excellent match-up dilemma for opposing teams, as she has done during her previous three seasons in Cincinnati.

Emy "O", as in "Offense"
Emy Ogide has been a favorite of Coach Pirtle's during her first two seasons at UC. A dominant defender with amazing athleticism, an incredible wing-span and a 6-2 frame, Ogide has always brought a toughness and skill to the Bearcats defensive attack. She has also brought the ability to run the floor with the guards and give the team a fourth option on the break. However, this season the other Big "O" has added an offensive moves on the low block to her already potent repertoire. Against DT3, Ogide was the only true post player to score in double figures for the 'Cats, as she finished with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting. If the "O" can stand for "O"ffense all season, the 'Cats could be even more potent then many had expected them to be.

Tale of Two Halves
As they have done in their previous three exhibition matches, the DT3 team that squared off against the Bearcats tonight played well for at least one half against some of the premier talent in the country. DT3 took
Florida State to overtime on Wednesday, played well for one half against Vanderbilt on Thursday, and then came within one point of tying the Bearcats during the second half of Friday night's action. This team of nine former collegiate players from some of the top programs in the country, is comprised mostly of recent graduates and players playing overseas. Put together for an exhibition tour across the United States, DT3 has played three games in three days despite only having a roster of nine players.

Also, while the 'Cats dominated the first half of action - 61-36 - it should be said that the DT3 roster only arrived at Fifth Third arena only 25 minutes before tip-off. Not necessarily having adequate time to warm-up for the first half, DT3 came out well prepared for the second half and denied UC on the inside and battled the Bearcats in the paint on the glass, grabbing 14 offensive rebounds despite having a tallest player listed at 6-1. Rebounding, defending the paint, and forcing the ball into the low-block are all points of emphasis for Pirtle and her staff going into Monday night's action against OGBR All-Stars.
