Breakdown Of Bearcats Over Ottawa

Bearcat Insiders Casey Weldon breaks down the Bearcats basketball teams victory over Ottawa on Saturday afternoon at Fifth Third Arena. Learn who made the difference and what was really on Coach Cronin's mind about his team and it's play.

Concise Recap
It took 53 points and 13 offensive rebounds in the second half but the University of Cincinnati men's basketball team once again prevailed during this exhibition portion of the 2006-07 season, overcoming their Canadian counterpart the University of Ottawa on Saturday afternoon, 81-59.

While the Bearcat margin of victory seems impressive at first look, the score tally is most certainly deceptive. The 'Cats struggled mightily during the first twenty minutes of action - and that is putting it mildly. They trailed for much of the first half and saw their offensive futility lead them to 28-all tie at intermission against a team not affiliated with the NCAA.

Cincinnati came to the floor in the second half with a poised passion after a lengthy intermission-long "chat" with first-year head coach Mick Cronin that saw them come out of the locker room only a minute or so before the second half was ready to commence. Firing on all cylinders, UC raced out to a 20 point lead thanks to a dominating defensive effort and a more consistent shooting attack. While they saw that margin dwindle to 10 points, the 'Cats went on a final burst in which they outscored the visiting GeeGees, 19-7, in the final five and a half minutes. All five starters reached double digits in scoring, though Cronin is wary that he got only 10 points from UC's short bench.

With the victory, Coach Cronin and boys improve their exhibition season a unblemished with a perfect 2-0 record, even though the process by which they defeated their two opponents - Northern Kentucky (Division II) and the University of Ottawa (Canadian) - was anything but perfect.

Player of the Game: John Williamson
The Bearcat Insider Player of the Game award goes to John Williamson, who is picking up his second such award of the season. Williamson was stellar on the offensive end but it was his dominating second-half effort on the glass that won him his second BCI POG award. Williamson collected nine boards during the second twenty minutes of action, which was only two less then the entire Ottawa lineup. Williamson strong play on the boards included four of the offensive variety during the second half, seven for the game. Williamson's offensive rebounding helped spur on a team-wide scoring outburst that saw the team go for 51 points. Williamson tallied 14 total rebounds (seven offensive, seven defensive) during his game-high 35 minutes of action.

Williamson's production was not limited to rebounding, however. The Cincinnati State product contributed a game-high 18 points, four of which came very late in the contest. Williamson displayed in excellent in and out game, going 7-of-13 from the floor and four-of-four from the charity stripe. Williamson dominated down low against a smaller Ottawa team and, while he did not make a 3-pointer, displayed an ability from the perimeter. The junior also displayed his ability in the open court, showing his athleticism and ability to excite the crowd with some jaw-dropping dunks. He also helped initiate the offense with four assists and helped lead to easy buckets by blocking three Ottawa shots.

These past two games have helped prove Williamson to be perhaps the Bearcats most talented and capable all-around player, particularly on the offensive end. He will certainly help take some of the pressure of Cedric McGowan this season. In the first game of his Cincinnati career, Williamson led the team with 21 points (8-of-12) and seven rebounds.

Warren Commission
After a poor first half as a team, Coach Cronin utilized his 15 minutes in the locker room to the fullest during intermission, tearing into his team for a lack of effort on the court. Jamual Warren, the Bearcats first-year point guard, was one athlete that found his way into the sights of Cronin's fire. The Bearcat head coach "commissioned" Warren to take control of the game and lead the team. Warren continued to struggle handling the position of being a coach on the floor, relaying what the UC staff desired from him, and making decisions during the first half, a product of his being able to simply "play" at the junior college level.

However, inspired by his coach's fiery temperament and his own damaged self-confidence, Warren went into the second half with something to prove, the hallmark of this Bearcat team. While he was not necessarily the most dominant player for the entire match, the was most certainly the most important. The way Warren responded during the second half really helped change the tone - and possibly the direction - of the game. Warren's performance during the early portion of the second half helped the 'Cats go on a 30-10 run to open the second half. During the half Warren scored 13 points, dished out four assists and came way with a pair of steals.

Warren's efforts are symbolic of the team-wide metamorphosis made during that second half and of the important role the 'Cats new point guard has on this team. While it may be a bit of a stretch to claim as he goes so do the Bearcats, it is obvious that they are a much better and focused team overall when Warren is controlling the floor. While it would be an oversight to claim that none of this should/could be credited to the defensive efforts of the Ottawa club, it was clear that it was largely based on Warren's mental preparedness for the situation in front of him In the first half, Warren only scored three points, struggled to find a shot, and made several careless decisions. In the second half, when he was more aggressive, Warren simply found a way. He found a way to get things done on both ends of the court.

Hitting the Glass
Though they struggled mightily during the first half of Saturday's game, the Bearcats have displayed the willingness and ability to out-rebound all comers - if they work for it. During the second half of their match-up against the University of Ottawa, the Bearcats destroyed dominated the rebounding battle, tallying 24 rebounds to their opponents 11. Making this total all the more shocking is the fact that the 'Cats production on the offensive glass was greater then the GeeGees' total production during the period. Cincinnati collected 13 rebounds off their own misses, despite only misfiring on 19 shots during the period.

While the ending result seems to identify rebounding as a game-long strength, the fact of the matter is that UC was simply out "everything" - worked, hustled, and positioned - during the period. Cincy allowed an undersized team - both in terms of height and bulk - to take the rebounding advantage, 20-17. Perhaps most disappointing was the 'Cats allowed seven second chances to this scrappy collection of Canadians during the period. That first half will go a long way in showing the Bearcat squad that if they do not work to out hustle, out position, and out "care" their opponents they will consistently get beat on the glass, particularly if they are faced with a size disadvantage all season. Against NKU, a rare instance where the Division-I school out hustled their D-II opponent, the 'Cats hammered the glass en route to a decisive 42-19 advantage.

Everyone Knows Three is More Than Two
The past two games have indicated that this 2006-07 rendition of the Cincinnati Bearcats has shown an aptitude for the three-point shot. In each of the past two games the 'Cats have connected on eight shots from behind the arc. While most people in the know knew that UC would have a very athletic roster, they did not necessarily expect the outside shooting touch that has been displayed thus far. The ability to hit from the perimeter will certainly help a Cincinnati attack that is undersized for the time being by forcing the defense to come out and play a little more tightly on the inside, giving the quicker UC forwards a chance to use their athleticism to their advantage against slower "bigs."

Also, the Bearcats have seen some unexpected names show the ability to hit from deep. Players such as Williamson (2-of-2), Marcus Sikes (3-of-4), Ronald Allen (1-of-3) and Cedric McGowan (1-of-6) have all displayed a comfort level from outside during the exhibition season. The efforts of McGowan and Williamson have been particularly impressive during the early portion of this season because of the fact they have only recently started to develop a consistent game from beyond the arc. This was a focal point of Coach Cronin, who expected the duo to spend a lot of time at the small forward/wing this season with their expected height. If some of that "expected height" becomes eligible - Adam Hrycaniuk - the Bearcats will add another true shooter to the UC front court, as well.

The Bearcats were 8-of-17 against NKU and 8-of-20 against Ottawa. Last season, UC averaged more than six 3-point shots per game (211) and just about 19 attempts (641) over the course of 34 games.

NKU Hangover
Coach Cronin (and some of the players) discussed that they believed that there was a definite feeling of over-confidence coming into Saturday's contest. While he had feared it all week, he noticed that some of the players may have been taking their opponent too lightly, figuring that they should simply be able to show up, "play ball", and expect victory. However, this team is not been together enough and does not have the overall ability level to simply go out and "play". This team has to be exact and, more importantly, give a darn. The reason this collection of players has been so successful during their high school, junior college and early days at UC is because they have always had a chip on their collective shoulder. Having always been too small, not athletic enough, or simply overlooked, all of these players have constantly been looking for the opportunity to prove themselves. This is a quality that was quite evident during their first-ever game as a group in Fifth Third Arena as they took on the Norse. However, after having such success against NKU it seems like they felt like they had finally "made it" and lost some of that burning desire to prove people wrong. If this team cannot maintain that scrappy runt of the pack mentality, that constant desire to prove to all comers that they are worthy of victory, then this will be a long season for the Bearcats.

Let's Get Physical
While Marvin Gentry has achieved double-digit scoring production in each of his first two games in a Bearcat uniform, Coach Cronin has noticed that he has been bothered at times by the physical approach many teams are taking against him. While he has shot the ball well in the first two games, going 4-of-5 (3-of-4 from deep) and 4-of-9 (1-of-2 from deep), his game has been increasingly decided by the physicality of the opposing teams. He has been forced to start his offense from the outside and keep his efforts primarily around the arc. Cronin discussed that Gentry is having a tough time initiating his offensive game, particularly using his athleticism and getting toward the basket, due to the physical approach opposing players are taking with him. The thin-framed, slightly-built transfer from McLennan (junior college) even saw one of his dunk attempts in traffic get thwarted by the rim when the defense collapsed on him.

In many ways the Bearcats new shooting guard resembles their old shooting guard - literally and figuratively. Gentry possesses a similar build to former UC standout James White, who was often time visibly and physically frustrated by physical play. White was undeniably one of the top athletes in college basketball during his career, if not the best. However, he was unable to utilize that lightning first-step and his pogo stick-like leaping ability. Gentry must not only look to add strength to his body, but also to his mental game. He needs to get tougher both in terms of the grit that he plays with and also not allow the play of the other team to fluster him.

Only as Regard as Your Reserves...or Lack There Of
Coach Cronin is already seeing the lack of Hrycaniuk, Hernol Hall, and Abdul Herrera, who recently quit the team. With only eight players ready to play minutes for the Bearcats (nine, if you include Brendan Miller), the wear and tear of early-season two-a-days and two games in four days is beginning to take its tole on the Bearcats. Forced to play excessive minutes to many of his players, Coach Cronin has not been able to institute aspects of the game such as the full-court press and an even more up-tempo style of play because of the lack of bodies. With players such as Cedric McGowan struggling with cramp injuries, it will be imperative that the Bearcats avoid foul trouble until they can get the likes of Hall and Hrycaniuk back in the rotation.

One Man's Misfortune is Another's Opportunity
One player taking full-advantage of the absence of the three "H's" - Hall, Hrycaniuk and Herrera - is second-year Bearcat Ronald Allen (story on Allen coming later this week). Admittedly not ready for what former Bearcat head coach Andy Kennedy was asking of him, Allen felt like he dug himself into a hole at UC due to his failure to be prepared for the season. After falling out of the rotation, Allen's role at UC was much in doubt. However, with a new coaching staff in place and a hunger to make his senior season productive, Allen has dedicated himself to doing whatever gets him on the floor and helps his team to win. Whether it is playing anywhere along the front line, no matter the small forward or the center, Allen has brought a tenacious defensive effort and a team-first approach to the game. Allen has averaged seven points and six rebounds in his two games of actions this season, and has also swatted away three shots during the exhibition campaign.

If the Season Stated Today...
Neither Coach Cronin or McGowan believe the team is ready to start the regular season just yet. They will look to take advantage of learning opportunities they had against Ottawa - showing them what playing from behind is like, forcing them to deal with adversity, and seeing what it will be like if they do not hustle - as well as the six days they have until their next game to get ready for regular-season basketball. One of the must important aspects of those six days will be getting healthy and bodies ready to play on three consecutive days (11/10-11/12), especially if Hall is not cleared to play by then.

Up Next...
The Bearcats will perform in the three-day, three-game Jim Thorpe Classic live from Fifth Third Arena starting November 10 at 7 PM. The Bearcats will square-off against the likes of Howard, Tennessee-Martin and High Point over the course of the three-day span.
