Scouting Report High Point

BCI takes a look at the next opponent of the Bearcats, High Point. We provide a in-depth look and also have an audio interview with High Point's head coach for our premium members. The audio is also part of the Marcus Sikes story.

Two Games Thus Far:

It's been a mixed bag for the High Point Panthers during this early portion of their 2006-07 season.  Friday night in their season-opener, the Panthers looked terrible at times against Tennessee-Martin in a 64-61 last-second loss. I know it is hard to say a team struggled mightily in a one-point loss, but in this case it is true.  High Point saw itself get down early and often on the strength of countless mental and execution errors that led to easy buckets for the opposing Skyhawks.  The Panthers were forced to rely on scrappy play and three-point shooting to get themselves back in the game, which the did quite well.  If they could have opened the  game with the same effort and mental mindset they did for though 4 to 5 minute stretches we'd be talking about a team looking to improve their record to 3-0.

Saturday night we saw a HPU squad that looked a little more grounded and assure of its self when it hit the floor in their 81-62 rout of an overwhelmed Howard squad.  Then again, they were playing Howard.  Coming to the floor with better size, strength and overall skill, the Panthers managed to utilize their obvious ability advantages all game long.  They defended the post and denied ball-entry into the paint, refusing to allow an undersized Howard team the chance to initiate an offensive scheme that heavily relies upon easy buckets.  On the offensive end, High Point utilized its size and looked to get the ball more inside out and did not need to fire up nearly as many three-point shots as it did against UT-Martin.

Overall:

High Point seems to be a quality mid-major opponent.  They obvious lack in some key areas, especially in terms of overall size and depth, but they do feature enough of the "major" talent that should help them be effective against the presumed elite schools.  They feature a superstar-run offense that filters through Arizona Reid, the team's undersized do-it-all player.  However, the team will come at the game with about six or seven guys they can look at for points in a variety of ways.  While the team can get the ball up and down the court, they seem to be most effective when they can establish the game at the half court, particularly because they don't look to run that many guys. - which has hurt them, as they've had three players (including Reid and Cruz Daniels) foul out four guys in two games. Reid has fouled out in both affairs.

Players to Watch

F Arizona Reid 6-5 210

Reid is the type of player every team wants on their team. The kid is smart, talented and a leader. Most importantly, though, he is hungry. Not blessed with "tear the rim down" athleticism or sheer physically imposing size, Reid brings toughness and hunger to the floor that helps him to compensate for what he lacks. Reid has been the most dynamic overall player in the Jim Thorpe Classic thus far in the season, leading the competition in scoring (tied at 20.5; John Williamson) and is currently second in rebounding (8.5), but leads in offensive rebounding (4.0).  Reid possesses the unique talent of a two-guard or small forward playing at the power forward position.  Brining those ball skills to the four-spot makes him as much of a match-up problem for the opposing team as they are for him.  When you add his tenacity, basketball IQ, and his unquenchable will to win to his ball skills he becomes that much more of a dominant player.

NBA Comparison: A less athletic Chris Porter with more ball skills

C Cruz Daniels 6-11 215

This shot blocking nightmare is an oddity in college basketball.  Not only because of his freakish size and rail-like frame, but because he was able to slide down to a mid-major level school. Generally, when a player of this physical stature falls down to a school like High Point the perception is that he is size alone.  However, Daniels seems to be the exception to this rule.  He as long as anyone in the country and would be an imposing interior figure length wise just standing straight up.  However, this kid can leap as well, which has helped make him the best shot blocker in this tournament - and probably one of the best in the country.  Daniels has eight in two games (five against UT-Martin, three against Howard) but should have been credited with more than that because of all the shots he changed, got a finger on or kept from coming inside.  He is not physically strong enough to guard a true "big" down on the block, so he is more of a weak-side defender to this point in his career. Though they use the zone sparingly, he is the type of guy you hide back in the middle of the paint and let him swat shots away.  Offensively, his lack of strength poses a problem for the team as well. He has yet to develop many post moves and isn't strong enough to bang for 30 to 35 minutes. He also struggles rebounding the ball where he gets shoved underneath the basket routinely - though, he still gets some rebounds due to his length.  He does compensate for his weak physical stature with his quickness. He runs well and has good feet, so this 6-11 manchild is still able to score at times against slower, bulkier big men.

NBA Comparison: Samuel Dalembert/Keith Closs

G/F  Troy Bowen 6-4 205

This is the type of pure shooter every team loves to have. He can simply shoot the basketball. Bowen currently leads the Jim Thorpe Classic with seven made three-point tries, while he is second in attempts (12). He is currently hitting at a .583 percentage.  The deadly shooting of Bowen is what makes him a player to watch.  However, that is about all he does. Last season he attempted 127 shots (45 makes) and 101 (34) of those were from behind the arc. This season he has scored 27 points total (13.5 ppg) and 21 of them have come from behind the arc. He is one of those players that seems to either standout or is completely shutout.  In the two games this season, Bowen saw himself score 19 points against UT-Martin (5-of-9 from 3-point range) while only going for eight against the under-skilled Howard squad (2-of-3 from deep).   His offensive output is generally predicated by the defensive mentality of the opposing team.  The team looks for him against the zone as the "zone breaker" that can open up the inside, but he seems to fall out of favor when they are able to establish a more motion style of offense, surprisingly. Either way, though, the kid is a shooter and has to be watched. A defense cannot slack on him or he can light a player up at any time. His mere presence on the court all but negates the possibility of a double team in the post.  I would not be surprised if they lineup one of their weaker post-players on the same side as Bowen to give him a one-on-one look at the basket.

NBA Comparison: Fred Hoiberg/Eric Piatkowshki

Match-up to Watch: Arizona Reid vs. John Williamson/Cedric McGowan

It will be interesting to see this match-up for several reasons. First, this one-on-one battle will likely feature the game's two most dynamic offensive weapons when Williamson guards Reid.  They feature very similar skill assets, possessing guard skills but playing the power position, though Williamson is clearly more physical at this conjuncture.  Despite the potential for an offensive showdown, the most intriguing aspect of this battle could be how they play defense. Both Williamson and Reid have displayed a tendency to get into foul trouble. Cincinnati has gone zone at times to help hide Williamson but he has still fond ways to take himself out of the game.  For High Point, on the other hand, Reid's reckless abandon style works both for him and against him.  While he needs his high-energy approach in order to be a successful player, it also leads to hurtful fouls for his team.  He needs to be composed in order to stay on the floor.  I would not be surprised if the winner of this battle set the tone for the game - and maybe the outcome.

Bearcat Insider Prognostication: 74-61, Bearcats

UC has the superior team athletically but their collective youth -at least in terms of playing together - has left them vulnerable at times to sustained stretches by their opponent.  Cincinnati has to bring a continued effort to the court and match that with the ability to finish.  I don't believe the ‘Cats can with attempting 24 3-point shots, especially when 16 of them are coming from their post players. Because High Point will shy away from zone defense, this should allow the Bearcats the opportunity to dump the ball into the post to give UC's perimeter players an opportunity to work one-on-one or even take an open shot for once. This could especially be the case if High Point decides to double in the paint to help out Daniels.  The guards have to play as well on offense for the Bearcats as they have on defense during this early stretch of the season.

Cincinnati clearly has the more physically gifted team it will just be about utilizing those abilities in conjunction with Mick Cronin's system.  In order to do that, they need to have Jamual Warren play a strong game.  He has struggled recently initiating the Bearcat offense and this opportunistic Panther team with a knack for turning teams over and scoring in a hurry will take advantage of each of those miscues.   Many of those miscues not only lead to execution errors on offense but defensive errors that lead to points - or worse, fouls.
