Recap & Audio From Women's Victory

Bearcat Insider was on hand for the Women's basketball team's home opener on Tuesday night. Here is a breakdown of the game and some audio clips for our premium members to listen to with several members of the team.

Overall

The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team dominated against an undersized, overwhelmed, and outmatched Arkansas-Pine Bluff squad in their regular season home opener on Tuesday night en route to an easy 89-65 victory. With the sterling victory, UC improves to 2-0 on the young season.  The Bearcats barely defeated Youngstown State this past weekend to start the season.

The Bearcats hot performance was much needed after their lackluster performance against the Penguins. Against YSU, the 'Cats got out to a hot start but slipped defensively which nearly led to their demise, as they fell behind in the first half and for the early portion of the second.  The Bearcats lacked energy and defensive presence during that season-opening showcase by failing to bring the energy a Laurie Pirtle-led squad is used to exhibiting on the floor.

Tonight, however, that energy returned.  UC brought with them a constant effort, one that surely pleased Pirtle and the team as a whole. This game was much needed, not only to show the team can play this way but, also, that they can play this way when they should.

The ‘Cats cooked up a baker's dozen (13) from behind 3-point arc on the game - a new team record (12; Houston in 2004) - and dominated the glass, winning the rebounding edge over the undersized Lady Lions, 41 to 30.  While Cincinnati only allowed Arkansas-Pine Bluff to rebound 12 of their 37 misfired shot attempts, they did manage to turn those errors into 13 points. This appears to be one area of weakness for the ‘Cats thus far.  On the other side, the much bigger, stronger Bearcats could only muster eight points despite their dozen chances.

While UC did turn the ball over 18 times (a product of the free-flowing lineups and heavily utilized bench), they played exceptional transition defense to cut down the Lady Lions fast-break opportunities.  The Bearcats limited the Lady Lions to just 15 points off turnovers and only allowed two points to come on the fast break.

The game was one that saw none of the UC starters play more then 18 minutes during the contest.  True freshman Carla Jacobs led the starting five in minutes played.  Jacobs, who is one of only nine freshman starters at point guard out of 324 colleges, finished with 13 points. Karen Twehues led the Bearcats in scoring, going for 15 points in that same number of minutes played.   In total, all 13 Bearcats saw action of at least six minutes and a trio of UC reserves played 20-plus minutes off the bench (Emy Ogide (21), Stephanie Stevens (21) and Jill Stephens (20).

First Half

UC was on fire for the first 20 minutes of action. They scored 51 points and were smoking from 3-point range, seemingly making anything that was fired toward the basket. While the Bearcats shot 58-percent from the floor (19-of-33) during the period, that was cold compared to what they did from behind the arc. The ‘Cats shot 10-of-13 from deep which opened up their inside game. UC saw seven of their bombs come from Twehues (4-for-4) and Jacobs (3-for-3). The added pressure the Lady Lions needed to apply to the perimter helped open up the paint for the Bearcats, enabling Cincinnati to tally 14 points off offensive rebounds and excessive pressure on the defense.

After struggling last game defensively for long periods of time, the Bearcats held the Lady Lions to 24 points and sub-30 percent-shooting. UC's defensive effort did not only deny Arkansas-Pine Bluff quality shot attempts, but limited their looks at the basket altogether. Cincinnati forced 12 turnovers, which turned into 18 points for the Bearcats via five steals and other UAPB miscues.  The ‘Cats were also able to parlay their defensive chances into eight fast break points.

Much like the question of which came first the chicken or the egg, Pirtle has been asking of what came first offensive production or defensive energy. Pirtle has wondered if her team could play on the defensive end. It seems tonight that the Bearcat energy on defense is definitely there - possibly even preceding the offensive flow. However, that question really could not be answered during the first half due to the fact the shots kept falling all period long.

Second Half

While their first-half success came easy to them, their triumphs during the second half did not - even when the starters were on the floor. The first five minutes of the half saw UC struggle in terms of their offensive output. For the first time all night, the ‘Cats offense was not firing on all cylinders - but they managed to increase the lead despite that fact.  In just over four minutes of action to start the period, the Bearcats went on a 12-4 run to begin the second stanza.  While it seems like much of that success was perpetrated on the offensive end, it actually came about because of their ability to play defense.  Cincinnati was struggling to hit shots but saw no such struggles when it came to stopping their opponent, a major departure from what fans of the Bearcats did not see in their previous three outings (including the preseason).

While the most important thing for Pirtle to see on Tuesday was her team's continuous, non-discriminant effort on the defensive end, the fact that she was able to give some of her role player an opportunity to perform in actual extended periods during game situations could prove to be just as vital. While players such as Stevens, Ogide, Angel Morgan and Kahla Roudebush have seen minutes during the early portion of their careers, they have not really had the opportunity to play extensive continuous minutes - especially, together.  However, the effort against UAPB allowed the group the opportunity to play and, most importantly, to struggle!  The "second group" was able to play through their mistakes and was given minutes against another team's starters, two things that will prove to be immeasurably beneficial in building this team as an entire unit, moving them a starter-dependent group. As the classic saying goes, a team is only as good as their weakest link, so by allowing their perceived "weaker links" to prove themselves during game situations they are in fact strengthening the group.

Stevens had the opportunity to lead the team into and through the Bearcats' offensive system, test her basketball IQ, and perform against the press, all three of which she did well.  Stevens looked good handling the ball against pressure and had the chance to make difficult decisions. While the youngster finished with three assists, her "freshmenitis" began to cease as the game wore on.  Stevens began to fell comfortable in the offense, helping her to five points and a pair of assists.  Known primarily as a shooter, an asset she has heavily relied upon early in her college career, Stevens broke free from that mold against Arkansas-Pine Bluff by establishing her ability to take the ball into the paint off the dribble, making her a triple threat with her ability to pull-up, kick out to the wing or take it to basket.

In addition to Stevens at the point guard, the Bearcat wings had the opportunity to prove themselves on the court.  Morgan and Roudebush have each had opportunities to play on the court of the Bearcats during their young careers. However, this early-season game enabled the opportunity to expand their typical roles on the team. Each had the opportunity to be aggressive on the offensive end, something that is not necessarily the role they are accustomed to filling.  The sophomore tandem generally play passive roles in the offense, contributing primarily as spot-up shooters and hardnosed defensive players. However, the outing against the Lady Lions allowed the duo to become more involved offensively, as they combined for 17 points, five rebounds and seven assists in their combined 34 minutes of action.  Morgan tied a career high in scoring with eight points and continued to show her evolving perimeter game, as well as her passing skills (three assists) and her ability to contribute on the glass from her guard position (four rebounds; two offensive).

Roudebush showed her continued development as a player, continuing to progress toward reaching her ultimate potential toward becoming the shooting threat she was believed to be before coming to Cincinnati.  "Roude" hit a pair of 3-pointers during the game, showing her continually improving comfort level in the Cincinnati offense.  She also dished out a team-leading four assists.

While the majority of the Bearcat inexperience on the bench comes from the backcourt, Ogide is one player in the UC frontcourt in desperate need of some work - both for her own sake and the team's.  Ogide, who set a career-high in rebounds on Tuesday with nine, is a long, athletic frontcourt player, the kind of player you would expect to see at high-level programs (such as the Bearcats are attempting to become). However, while she is a defensive-minded player, her on-court IQ and offensive game have been sorely lacking during her previous two campaigns with UC. This year, however, the junior is looking for the offense. On Tuesday, UC was looking to feature the 6-foot-2 junior in the paint. Lobs over-the-top against smaller players looking to front, giving her the ball deep in the low-block where she was forced to use her evolving post moves, and working as an offensive rebounder, were all areas of the game that Ogide worked on against the Lady Lions. Although only going 3-for-8 from the floor, Ogide had many opportunities and was constantly looking for her shot. Her aggressiveness on the offensive end would give the Bearcats a second traditional low-post scoring option.

Up Next

The Bearcats will take a step-up in competition in their next game on the season, taking on the Dayton Flyers on Thursday night. The Bearcats' Atlantic 10 foe will feature much more size, strength and athletic ability then the Lady Lions and will be the stiffest competition the 'Cats will have faced this season.  It will be important that UC come out with the same aggressiveness - on both ends - that they displayed on Tuesday night if they hope to come through with a victory and continue their winning streak to three.
