Class Of 2007 Taking Shape

Last Saturday night the University of Cincinnati football program entertained it's largest class of recruits for a home game. While the Class of 2007 is taking shape, Saturday provided many juniors the chance to share in the growth of the program and to see the excitement many feel is headed the Bearcats way. But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, lets look at the Class of 2007.

After coming in with only days to fill the Class of 2004, Coach Mark Dantonio has signed back-to-back classes that have set the stage for the future of the Bearcats program.  This year the Bearcats staff will not have the luxury of signing 25 student athletes to scholarship papers as the program will only lose a handful of seniors.  Lets take a look at the numbers and give you some idea about who the staff may be targeting and who is set to sign on the dotted line.

One look at the Bearcats football roster and you see fifteen seniors listed.  That number is the number we must work with give or take one or two.  With the status of players like Jamar Howard and Brandon Miller up in the air and the talk of Mister Simpson and Sirjo Welch both being on the roster by next fall, it means the Bearcats will not be signing many players come February.  Because of the small number those who have interest better start making up their mind if they have UC at the top of their list.

With eight players having made verbal commitments or expected to be part of the 2007 class, it looks as if the number of open scholarships could be down to 10.  Keep in mind we don't know the exact number of scholarships open since players may leave the program and others may already be enrolled such as Simpson and Welch.  One other area the Bearcats staff had done a great job at is rewarding those who come as walk-ons with scholarships and I'm sure they have one or two they want to take care of this year as well.

Our breakdown doesn't say this is the exact number they will take at a position but only the numbers they are looking hard at.

OFFENSE

Quarterback: (1 or 2) Even with the commitment of Chazz Anderson the Bearcats would still take the right quarterback if he wanted to head to UC.  But keep in mind it must be the right one.  Not just any quarterback will do because of the ability Anderson has shown. Verbal Commitment: Chazz Anderson

Offensive Line: (4-5) The biggest position to fill in this class.  Look for the Bearcats to take between 4-5 offensive linemen before it's all said and done.  From looking at those who've been offered, the Bearcats are showing a heavy interest in linemen who can get down the field and not just those with size.  The number one target had looked to be Huber Heights Wayne tackle Jeremy Shrieves who received his offer after camping at UC and enjoying a great Scout.com Combine in the spring.  But another lineman has looked to step ahead of Shrieves at this time.  Jared McGaha made an unofficial visit during the Syracuse game and looks to have risen on the Bearcats radar as their top choice for the Class of 2007.  While Shrieves could still be an option, he's not really shown the interest in being a Bearcat since he's not visited practice or during any of the team's home games this season.  Another name to keep an eye on is Mark Jackson who prepped at Columbus Brookhaven and is now working at Harmony Community School.  Jackson played center at Brookhaven and has great size and physical ability but he seems to have his sights set on a more name program instead of the fast rising Bearcats.  Cincinnati fans held hope Mark Wetterer would look to chance his college verbal after John L. Smith had been released from his duties at Michigan State, but as of right now he seems solid with his choice.  But things could change when a new coach is named in the coming weeks.  Don't be surprised if names you've not heard of enter into the Bearcats recruiting picture at this position.  This was the case in both of the past two classes and not unusual because of the nature of the position.  Most scouting services look for those players who've shown their ready to take the field while most college programs look for players they can develop.  Who had heard of Jeffrey Linkenbach until he signed his letter of intent or C.J. Cobb before he game his verbal to the staff in last years class?

Wide Receiver: (1 or 3) The future of Jamar Howard has now been determined as he's headed off to junior college and will return when his academics are in order.  Howard was in the plans to be a major player for the Bearcats this season until the NCAA Clearinghouse had a problem with his high school and the classes he took.  The main target right now is Westerville-South receiver B.J. Cunningham who has the size the Bearcats staff likes from their receivers.

Will Johnson (Centerville, Ohio) has also given his verbal but some project him to play on the defensive side of the ball.  Look for the staff to place this great athlete at the position to get him on the field fast when he arrives on campus.  (We'll also place him a safety/linebacker)

There are also others like Derek Moye who may be a long-shot to pledge to the Bearcats but you never know.  Others to keep an eye on are Evan Farren (Cuyahoga Heights, Oh) and O.J. Woodard (Pompton Lakes, NJ).

Running Back: (1) A few weeks ago I'd told you the Bearcats wouldn't look at this position for a player in this class, but things have changed.  First the move of Freddie Lenix to running back followed by his AWOL from the team came at the same time the staff was looking for ways to get Jacob Ramsey and John Goebel on the field by moving them to defense.  As of now it looks like Ramsey may stat at linebacker and Goebel as a safety or outside linebacker in the future.

Also keep in mind Mike Daniels will return next season to be in the mix as a hybrid back.  The name that has jumped out on the Bearcats recruiting list is Richard White Jr. (St. Joseph Elem & HS) out of Hammonton, New Jersey.  White looks to favor Big Ten teams Penn State and Iowa at the time being, but could also look to stay rooted in the Big East.  White shows he's got all the tools with great speed, vision and balance to go along with great strength.

Another New Jersey native named White is also getting strong looks from the Bearcats staff.  After watching West Virginia running back Steve Slaton the Bearcats are looking for their own back with break-away speed and may have found one in Teaneck, New Jersey product Rashad White.  Teaneck is the same home of Bearcat verbal Randy Martinez and Class of 2006 product Oren Wilson.  White has been timed at 4.35 and stands 5'10 – 170 and had seen only UC and Rutgers show interest enough to offer but has several programs talking offer in the coming weeks.

Tight End: (2) While the Bearcats have some great depth at the tight end position, they do lose the best tight end to come out of the program in Brent Celek.  They've already received the commitments from Celek's younger brother Garrett Celek and Georgia native David Duran.  I don't see the staff taking another one unless they are a dual type of athlete or can convert into an offensive lineman.  Verbal Commitments: Garrett Celek & David Duran

DEFENSE

Defensive Line (DT/DE): (4 - 6) The Bearcats lose Tony Carvitti but have a ton of depth along the line.  But keep in mind Anthony Hoke, Angelo Craig & John Newton are all juniors and the staff has enjoyed being able to rotate the number of players they have this year.

Solomon Thomas and Ben Martin are the number one targets but both seem to be looking for bigger programs to head towards.  Solomon should look at the recent moves of two former players at major programs that have become Bearcats to see UC could be the right program for him.  But while Bearcat fans can dream of Thomas or Martin wearing the Red & Black, three players have already shown their commitment to Coach Dantonio and his staff.

Oren Wilson signed with the Bearcats in last year's class but needed an extra year at Harmony Prep to get his academics in order.  Everything looks to be on track and Wilson told BCI he plans on staying a Bearcat.

Rob Trigg pulled the trigger in mid October and looks to have all the tools the staff has been recruiting with past players.  Randy Martinez is listed as a linebacker but has the size to play along the line and projects to be a defensive end.

Another New Jersey native has the Bearcats high on his list in Marcus Valentine.  The 6'3-245 Valentine made an unofficial visit during the Rutgers game and told BCI he's got serious interest in what the Bearcats have to offer and could make the call in the coming couple of weeks.

Others who hold offers and have shown interest include Charlie Hatcher, Jeff Rieskamp, Brandon Bullock and Greg Meisner.  After not showing much interest Hatcher attended back-to-back games and Meisner was seen at the Rutgers game as well.

Defensive line looks to be a position that could fill up fast and leave some very talented players out in the cold. Verbal Commitments: Rob Trigg, Oren Wilson, Randy Martinez

Linebacker: (2 - 4) The lose Kevin McCullough and that will be a tough loss to fill, but with players waiting in the wings to get their chance and the move of Jacob Ramsey to the position the need is not as big as once thought.

Leo Morgan is listed as a senior but will return next season since he only played one season at the junior college ranks.  This is huge because Morgan has been one of the biggest surprises on the Bearcats defense this season and is showing the signs of taking his game to another level.

Middletown native Scott Johnson is the type of player the Bearcats are looking for at the outside backer spots.  Johnson gave his commitment in early September and will bring great speed (4.3) to the linebacker core.

A verbal commitment came from Centerville High School product Will Johnson after he and his mother visited the Bearcats for a recent game.  Johnson is a great athlete (wide receiver) who played running back in high school.  While a set position won't be known until he arrives on campus, we've decided to list his as a linebacker.  Johnson brings great size (6'2-210) and should pack on another 15-25 pounds without losing his great speed before all is said and done.  As stated in our receiver breakdown he also could see time on the offensive side of the ball but many feel he'll add to the attacking scheme Coach Narduzzi employees either at linebacker or safety.

Another player the Bearcats have great interest in is Greg Jones of Moeller High School.  Jones has size and speed and has proven himself in the always tough GCL during his career.  If the Bearcats can get Jones they'll have one of the best groups of linebackers in the Big East in this class.

Also on this list are Kellen Harris, Jarmale Hines, Alex Silvestro, Vince Harris and Aaron Gresham.  Another player getting looks is Huber Heights Wayne linebacker Lorren Womack.  With many feeling Harris has grade issues you can look at him maybe coming in another class after prep school or junior college, but a cat fight could come at this position very fast and just like at the defensive line position some great talent could be left out. Verbal Commitment: Scott Johnson & Will Johnson

Defensive Backs (Corner/Safety): (1-3) The seniors are Antoine Horton, John Bowie and Dominic Ross.  All three have seen the field with Ross and Bowie starting this year and Horton in seasons past.  But again there are several players to fill in at these positions and the questions remains about the future of Brandon Miller.

Anthony Smith of Harmony Prep School is a 4-star safety who is giving the Bearcats some serious interest and holding offers from Minnesota and Illinois.

Brian Peters is another safety prospect the Bearcats have shown much interest in and is a teammate of quarterback commitment Chazz Anderson.

Rocco Pentello holds an offer and not much is known of his interest in the Bearcats at this time.  Pentello is a son of a coach and has keep things tight to the vest

At the corner back spot Otis Merrill from Cleveland Glenville High School earned his offer from camp and not much has been heard from him since.  Another player holding an offer is Chris Rucker from Warren G. Harding High School the same program current Bearcat Anthony Hoke came from.

Another thing to remember at the safety position is the recent move of John Goebel there; while Goebel could return to running back he also could stay at safety or grow into an outside linebacker.
