Keys to the Game: Guarding Gray

Gray's Anatomy

Make him hurt, make him tired, those are two key phrases the Bearcats will have to utilize when attempting to play against Pitt's Aaron Gray, one of the best big men in the country.  A dominant low-post scorer and a throwback-style player in the paint, Gray uses his 7-foot frame and his Paul Bunyan-esque body to physically impose his will, and vicariously the will of the entire Panther squad, on undersized and overpowered defenders in the paint.  With that being said, there are ways of defending the big man.  In terms of playing the All-American straight up, there are multiple approaches to attacking him both defensively and offensively.

Guarding Gray is a concern for all times, but for an undersized team like the Bearcats it is a nightmare.  The Bearcats will have to implore a series of different looks to try to guard Pitt's behemoth of the hardwood, both to find a style that works best against him and to stop the Panther's from counterpunching with a change in style themselves.  Styles such as fronting, double-teams both before he gets the ball and after, trapping, zone defense (2-3), and attempting to make him catch the ball outside 10 feet are the most direct ways of defending him.  Another indirect style of defense will have nothing to do with Gray directly.  This form of "D" will require the Bearcat guards to exert extra effort on the perimeter, forcing the Pitt backcourt to work the ball around the perimeter, denying quality looks to Gray in the paint.  The ultimate goal in this defense would be to force passes and put the team in uncomfortable, turnover-prone situations.

The Bearcats can also attempt to take Gray out of the game by utilizing their offense to the fullest of its potential.  The quick up-and-down play of the Bearcats and the athletic, undersized (not so) big men UC features will be able to exploit Gray's overall lack of athleticism.  While Gray is in the best shape of his life, he is not comfortable either guarding on the perimeter or running the floor.  By forcing him into full-court situations, the Bearcats will leave Gray vulnerable to both defensive fouls and fatigue.

While the ‘Cats will mostly look to their up and down style and their perimeter game to counteract Gray's abilities, they will also look to go inside.  Successful offensive possessions down low against Gray could do many things for Cincinnati.  Some of the benefits include, but are not limited to, getting Gray into foul trouble, open up the outside for perimeter shots (even if they are just passing the ball down low), and may give UC players and fans alike a sense of confidence that can help them overcome some of the talent-based limitations the Bearcats will face.

On Your Mark…Get Set…Go!

Building on the previously mentioned point, the ‘Cats will look to run up and down the floor. Not only is Gray a solid rebounds, but the Panther front line of Levon Kendall and some of the reserves off their bench are quality defenders in the half court as well. For this reason, UC must look to establish the tempo of the game.  Getting the game into a more up-tempo pace will favor the ‘Cats because of athleticism and because it will likely force the more half-court friendly Pitt squad into making decisions on the fly, which could lead to Pitt turnovers and easy buckets for UC.  In addition, Pitt does not like to go particularly deep so it could fatigue a team that is used to more of a slow-down style of game. This will be in addition to either tiring out Gray, getting him into foul trouble or just making him less effective in both the offensive and defensive sets head coach Jamie Dixon prefers to run.

Where Did He Come From?

While Gray is undoubtedly the most talented of the Panthers, you cannot focus solely on the kid from Emmanus, Pa.  Pitt has a whole host of role players that reap the benefits of teams doubling down on, trapping or attempting to zone against them as a way of taking Gray out of the game.  If teams decide to double team Gray, his height enables him to pass over the top of the defender to open players both in the paint and on the perimeter.  Mike Cook, Levance Fields and Antonio Graves, as well as Ronald Ramon are all competent 3-point shooters that are left open due opponents' relentless desire to take Gray out of the contest.  Look for Panthers on the wings at all time, as Gray will look to pass the ball out quickly to guarantee easy looks for his sharpshooters on the wing, which will generally be on the strong side.

In addition to passing the ball out of the skilled players on the perimeter, Gray is also court savvy enough to pass the ball back across the box to his senior big man on the other side.  Kendall is a 6-foot-9 veteran with long arms, quick feet and a great feel for the game.  If Gray is double in the paint, Kendall always seem to find away to come unfettered from his defender, which will leave him wide-open under the basket.  This will be the case along with backdoor-cutting guards, as well as bench players Sam Young and Tyrell Biggs, a pair of undersized big men that move well without the ball.  Even if Gray decides to take the shot, it is important that the Bearcats pickup their man and box out, as Kendall is one of the best offensive rebounders, easy put-back artists in the country.  He has made a name for himself the past two years on the weak side, waiting for loose balls to come his way.
