Tarrance Gibson Talks To Bearcat Insider

Tarrance Gibson came to Cincinnati from Dothan, Alabama in 1989 to play basketball for the Bearcats. Eighteen years later, he's still a Bearcat living in the Queen City. Tarrance spoke with Bearcat Insider about his career, the state of the UC program and recruiting.

Long time Bearcat basketball fans will certainly remember this rangy 6' 2" guard from rural Alabama. Tarrance Gibson arrived as a member of Bob Huggins' first recruiting class along with Michael Joiner, but unlike Joiner, Gibson stayed his entire career and in his junior and senior seasons helped the Bearcats return to the Final Four in 1992 and earn a spot in the Elite Eight in 1993.

The player nicknamed T-Rat has made Cincinnati his permanent home and can often be found at Bearcat basketball games. He talked about the transition from Dothan to Cincinnati. "I don't think it was too big a culture shock because you had all kinds of cultures on campus, and Levertis Robinson, Keith Starks, Andre Tate and Steve Sanders did a great job of making me feel right at home. But from the size of the city and how big Cincinnati was, it was culture shock from that perspective."

Gibson came to the Bearcats as a defensive specialist, but he left as a legitimate threat to hit the outside shot. As a freshman, Tarrance shot 39% from the floor. Three years later, Gibson was a 51% shooter. Oddly, an injury aided in his improved marksmanship. "I got injured my sophomore year and had to sit out and shoot only free throws and 3 point set shots. I also shot after practice with LaZelle Durden, Nick Van Exel, A. D. Jackson, Anthony Buford and guys like that. Huggs always made us shoot before and after practice. If you're willing to put the time in, you're going to reap the results."

Although Tarrance was recruited by and played for Coach Huggins, Tarrance absolutely loves what he sees from Coach Cronin and gave the new Bearcat coach the highest of praise. "Mick is truly a coach. He's a professional. I remember him basically living in his car and driving all across the country to basketball camps. That paid off. If you put in the work, you reap the results, and he landed his dream job early in his career. Mick's a personal friend of mine, and I'm very happy for him."

When asked how many Cincinnati games Tarrance attends, he enthusiastically replied, "Every game within a hundred miles. I have some frequent flyer miles and wanted to go to D.C. (Georgetown), but I didn't have enough miles to go. If they play within a hundred mile radius, I‘m usually there." When Bearcat Insider spoke to Tarrance, he was on his way to watch the UC/Georgetown game at A. D. Jackson's house.

Like many of the ex-Bearcats, their loyalty runs deeper than to one person. "I'm loyal to the program. Huggins told us loyalty is everything. I'm loyal to the program and loyal to Huggins, and I've always been loyal to my friends, and Mick is a friend."

From a personal standpoint, Tarrance is single but said he is contemplating marriage to his girlfriend and does have a 13-year-old daughter in town who is interested in becoming a writer. He is presently involved with choosing the right high school for her.

The young defensive special that seemed like perpetual motion on the floor almost two decades ago has now reached middle age. "I'm thirty-seven years old but a young thirty-seven. Be sure to print I'm a ‘young' thirty-seven." Tarrance has been working for JTM since his junior year in college, but he doesn't consider himself a poster child for the advantages of playing in a city like Cincinnati. "I can name plenty of guys that have stayed here. I don't know what it is about this place, but most of the guys that played with me are all living here and doing well." Tarrance said he is now second in command in the promotions department at JTM, a company that has expanded to all over the country.

In evaluating the 2006-2007 Bearcats, Tarrance thought back to his career. "I see 1989-1990 all over again with an exception. We had experienced junior leadership with Louis Banks, Keith Starks, Levertis Robinson and Andre Tate. This year they don't have that type of experienced leaders. They have leaders but not the same kind of experienced leaders that are going to make you play and give the effort every single day. If they knuckle down on the defensive end, they showed what they can do against West Virginia last Saturday."

Tarrance talked about the future of the UC program and the type of player needed to continue its elite status. "You have to have combo players. We have some guys that can play one or two positions, but they're having to play out of position. Once they get some bigger guys, those guys this year will be able to slide into their normal positions. I'm looking for big things next year." Tarrance continued. "Mick is a great recruiter, and I think he'll find one or two big guys. The Polish kid is a very skilled big man. Just getting him on the floor next year will move players to their natural positions."

One week ago when four star recruit Alvin Mitchell was on his official visit, Tarrance spent some time with the Florida star. "Alvin was a very nice young man. I got the chance to talk with him for about 15-20 minutes. He would fit right in here. He's a family oriented kid from what I gathered. If he's looking for a family atmosphere, he has certainly picked the right school. That's always been the case at Cincinnati. When I came to visit, I met Cedric Glover and Roger McClendon. I feel a sense of duty to continue that." Tarrance was not sure if Alvin has yet committed to the Bearcats but continued. "Alvin talked about his family and how important a family is, and from that standpoint, there are not a lot of Bearcat football or basketball players that moved back home. Most of them stay here and want to continue to support the programs."

Gibson's nephew is Xavier Gibson, a five star junior center at Northview High School in Dothan, Alabama. Tarrance talked about scout.com's #3 rated prospect. "He's my sister Kim's son. He's a truly southern kid about 6' 10.5". He has a very soft touch and can really shoot the ball. That's probably his biggest attribute. He has potential. It's not my duty to point him to a school so wherever he goes to school, I'm going to love him and support him."

When asked it Xavier has any sincere interest in attending the University of Cincinnati, Tarrance replied. "I can't say yes or no to that. I know he enjoys his time when he comes up every summer along with my other three nephews. They all come up and stay with me in the month of June. I will say he enjoys the time with his uncle." Tarrance outlined their stay in Cincinnati. "We go to basketball camps and movies. They're good young boys. They go to The Beach and Kings Island. They love Kings Island. When they go to Kings Island, I cut ‘em loose. I don't do any rides. I'm a scaredy cat, but they love that stuff."

Living in Monfort Heights near LaSalle High School has allowed Tarrance to easily see Danny McElroy, a 2009 verbal commitment to the Bearcats. Tarrance gave his impressions of the scout.com three star forward. "He's a talent. Having Mick here, he's going to get some of those top kids in Cincinnati like Huggins did. For a while, Huggins was getting all the best players here so I hope that starts again right now."

Tarrance summed up his affection and optimism for the Bearcat basketball program using his yearly March Madness bracket picks as the example. "Somehow or other I always figure out a way for the Bearcats to make it to the Final Four with my pool every year. When my guys at JTM see my picks, they just look at me and say, 'Thanks for the money.' I can never not root for them, and I see a way for them to win every game with defense since that was my greatest strength. There are guys on that team right now that have the ability to help this ball club every night at the defensive end. We can still make some hay this year if some guys on the bench will do that." Terrance Gibson is speaking from experience.
