ALMOST!

Missed it by that much, that is what the University of Cincinnati women's basketball team is saying about their performance against No. 6 UConn Tuesday night from Fifth Third Arena, as the underdog Bearcats took the probably Big East champions to the brink in just their second all-time meeting, 70-60.

Cincinnati from unarguably its greatest regular season victory in the program's rich history.

In a game that played much closer then its final 10-point margin of defeat would indicate, UC almost pulled off an unprecedented come-from-behind effort against the Huskies, who were looking for and ultimate earned their programs 700th all-time victory with the win, despite one of their poorer statistical shooting nights on the season.

While most prognosticators would have predicated that the ‘Cats would have had to shoot the ball to play with the Huskies, but that was not the case. Cincinnati only shot 33 percent on the game (13-of-29), knocking down just four of their 18 attempts from behind the arc. The 'Cats were 2 of 11 from behind the arc in the first half, missing each of their first seven chances early on in the contest.

UC made their surge on the strength of unbridled passion and energy, spurred on by both the hopes of landing a marquee victory for their season (and the program, overall) and the sick feeling they had after their recent performances. It is unquestioned that the ‘Cats would have viewed a victory over one of the nation's elite programs as a way to help to makeup for, or at least soften the blow from, lackluster efforts recently, failing to do the "little things" against Marquette and overall during the ‘Cats recent stretch of games which has seen them drop seven of their last 10 results. Against, UConn, the Bearcats played passionate basketball but they did not play out of control, something they had failed to do as of recent. Cincinnati claimed 15 offensive rebounds against the much taller Connecticut team while only turning the ball over 11 times despite initiating their frenetic up-and-down style of play that is highly susceptible to inducing turnovers.

In the end, it took a four-minute scoreless streak by the Bearcats and a late-minute surge by the Final Four-seeking Huskies to overcome an inspired second half effort from the upstart Cincinnati squad. Connecticut countered the Bearcat surge with a 12-5 run, including an 8-0 run to close out the game, holding the UC 0-of-11 from the field down the stretch.

Renee Montgomery would strike the signature blow in Connecticut's effort to fend off the upset designs of UC and secure the Huskies yet another 9-0 start to their Big East season by connecting on a wide-open 3-poiint at the top of the arc to give UConn a two-point, 62-60 lead with 4:02 to play. Montgomery's shot would be the eventual game winner, as Connecticut cut down on the free passes to the bucket that had plagued them through the middle portion of the second half.

With starting center and shot-blocker extraordinaire Tina Charles fouled out of the game, foul-ridden Kaili McLaren came up big --quite literally -- time and time again for the Huskies down the stretch on the defensive end. McLaren blocked shot after shot, limiting the clean looks of the undersized UC guards, and pummeled the Bearcat inside players that dared to try to establish position in the paint. The 6-2 behemoth in the paint almost doubled her season average in just about every key individual statistic against the Bearcats, most notably minutes (25), points (eight) and rebounds (eight). The greatest statistical hike for the D.C. native was in blocked shots, as she came away with four such rejections of the ‘Cats (three down the stretch).

Emy Ogide and Carla Jacobs each scored a team-high 12 points to pace the Bearcats, who fall to 12-9 on the season, 3-6 in Big East Play. Treasure Humphries and Michelle Jones contributed 11 points each to the UC cause.

Kalana Green led UConn (19-2, 9-0 Big East) with 20 points, while Cincinnati native and fan favorite Mel Thomas added 14, though was largely bottled up in the second half.

While trailing by 12 at the break, 38-26, the Bearcats were able to capitalize from Connecticut foul trouble inside to go on a 12-2 run midway through the second half. A mixture of dominating offensive rebounding and a stout defensive strategy that held the Huskies without a field goal for nearly three minutes to get within striking distance of reclaiming the lead for the first time since the opening minutes when UC reeled off a 6-0 run to begin the game. After Cincinnati's Angel Morgan and Treasure Humphries parlayed a pair of defensive rebounds into coast-to-coast efforts, turning a once double-digit lead into just a one-point differential possession, UConn was struck a devastating blow as Charles (six points, eight rebounds) , the Huskies inside presence defensively, fouled out of the game with well over six minutes to play in the contest.

With Charles fouled out and reserve center McLaren hanging on with four fouls, it looked like the Bearcats would have their way in the post. Jill Stephens gave UC its first lead of the half, calmly sinking both free throws to put the Bearcats up, 56-55. The Huskies turned the ball over on the very next play and Humphries made them pay, driving the distance for another two, and a 58-55 lead, the largest lead for Cincinnati outside the game's opening minutes.

Those opening minutes saw UC jump out to an early 6-0 run on the back of grit, determination and heart. However, soon thereafter, the ‘Cats quickly realized that it would take more than the script of a "feel good movie" to get them past UConn. Using dominant defense that forced the Bearcats out away from the basket, denying quality looks from everywhere inside 19 feet, while using their superior athleticism and great ball movement to go on a 19-0 run.

Even though the Bearcats were better taking care of the ball then they have been in recent games, only turning the ball over a relatively modest seven times, the Huskies were able to parlay those miscues into 10 points. UConn also held a clear advantage in second-chance points, using four offensive rebounds to finish with six points off Bearcat failures to boxout.

Despite their overall offensive futility during the period, the Bearcats were able to consistently dip into the sizeable Connecticut lead from time to time, even cutting the lead to under double digits late in the half. Trailing 27-4, UC cut the lead to 11, chance to cut it to single digits after denying the big boned McLaren in the paint. McLaren's foil in the paint, Bearcat center Jones, responded with a sweeping hook across the lane that drew contact and got the shooter's touch for the 3-point play, cutting the lead to eight.

However, two possessions later with the 'Cats now down 10, Cincinnati failed to find the shooter in transition after a missed opportunity on their own end to cut even further into the lead, leaving Cincinnati native Mel Thomas open to stick it to her hometown school once more with a 3-point connection on a secondary break to push the lead back up to 13 points.

UConn's Thomas, a high school teammate of Jones at Mt. Notre Dame Academy in Cincinnati, led her team in first-half scoring, going for nine points on the strength of 2-for-5 shooting, 2-of-3 from deep. Greene pitched in eight of her eventual team-leading point total during the opening stanza, while grabbing four rebounds during the period.

In addition, the Huskies potent inside combo of Charles and McLaren skinned the ‘Cats alive inside, going for a combined 12 points and nine rebounds (three offensive) during the first 20 minutes of action.

While the Bearcats unquestionably left all they had on the Fifth Third Arena floor last night against Connecticut, the team will have to recoup some of that spent physical and emotional energy they exerted during the contest, as they will hit the road to take on their third consecutive ranked team on February 3. The Bearcats will play at No. 23 Rutgers, one of the hottest teams in the nation, who is coming off an upset victory over Marquette team that defeated UC last Saturday.
