Friday, April 6-Practice #7 + Bonus Video

In between snow squalls, the Bearcats practiced in full gear. Practice ended with a 42 play scrimmage. Bearcat Insider was there to see all the action. In this report is a special video interview with Bearcats head coach Brian Kelly.

There were a number of snow squalls during today's practice, but the action was fast and furious as the Bearcats ended activity for the weekend with a scrimmage.  There were a number of recruits present along with February football signees.

-Mike Shaw (RB) from Trotwood- Madison High School visited today's practice with Coaches Beckman and Freeman.  Mike's been piling up the offers, but when asked if Cincinnati was a legitimate contender to land him, a big smile came across his face, and he gave a very positive reply.  Bearcat Insider has a story on Mike dated February 28.

-Elliot Mealer (6' 6"/280), a highly recruited tight end who will play on the offensive line in college, watched today's practice with his parents.  In addition to Cincinnati's offer, Elliot has about a dozen others including Michigan State, Indiana, Purdue and Michigan.

-Zac Dysert. a 6' 3"/190 pound quarterback from Ada, Ohio was on hand with his parents.  Zac has offers from Cincinnati and Troy.

-Josh Canafax, a 6'/180 pound receiver from Newport Central Catholic, watched practice with his father.  Zac played club football at Xavier last year but tried out last week for the Bearcats and reports an offer as a preferred walk-on.  Zac was getting the paper work done to enroll at Cincinnati.

-Preferred walk-on long snapper Tom DeTemple attended his second practice of the spring with his father along with Moeller teammate Ross Oltorik (QB).  Bearcat Insider did an article on DeTemple dated February 4 and on Oltorik on March 6.

-The Chaminade-Julienne group of Bearcat signees Rob Trigg (DE) and Blake McCroskey (OL) along with walk-on hopeful Joe Homan (LB) drove down from Dayton to watch practice.

-Kashif El-Amin (DB at Purcell-Marian) and his cousin Larry Black (DT at Wyoming) watched Kashif's brother, Khalil El-Amin, today.  Bearcat Insider wrote about Kashif and Larry on March 2.

-Driving from Lancaster, Ohio was Chad Maynard, a 6' 3"/299 pound offensive lineman and his father.

-Apparently Dana Bible's daughter attends Cincinnati and Dana was in town today.  Bible played at Cincinnati and was Rick Minter's first offensive coordinator.  Bible currently is the offensive coordinator at North Carolina State.

-Hughes Center head football coach George Kontsis was been regularly attending practices.  George has been sitting in for the quarterback meetings.  Coach Kontsis really likes Dustin Grutza and raves about Coach Kelly's system.  "Dustin Grutza really understand this offense… Coach Kelly's offense is big time."

-Mick Mickens picked up the only interception I saw in the one-on-one drill.

-I thought Dustin Grutza and Craig Carey both had maybe their best day in the 7-on-7 drill.  Derrick Stewart and Jared Martin each had nice catches for 20+ yards from Grutza.  Carig Carey had a nice completion to Mike Daniels for similar yardage.

The highlight of the practice was the scrimmage.  I counted 42 plays.  Possessions started at the 30 or 35 yard lines after a few goal line situations.  Without describing plays, here's what happened:

-Grutza pass incomplete.  Manalac tackle Benton for 8 yard loss. Grutza incomplete.  End of possession
