Bearcat Recruiting Bus Stops In Columbus

The University of Cincinnati continues to add quality players to its 2008 football recruiting class, and Patrick Omameh of St. Francis DeSales High School became the latest to board the Bearcat recruiting bus.

The seats are filling quickly on the Bearcat football recruiting bus as Cincinnati added another offensive lineman on Monday afternoon. Bearcat Insider spoke with the big Stallion from Columbus St. Francis DeSales High School to confirm his verbal commitment to the Bearcats. Patrick said he stands 6' 5" and weighs 250 pounds with an impressive 4.9 forty time. This young man is also impressive in the classroom where he boasts a 4.0 GPA. He's considering an engineering major at UC.

Patrick plays both offensive tackle and defensive end in high school, but he said Cincinnati's Tim Hinton recruited him as an offensive tackle.

The Columbus big man said he was getting plenty of recruiting interest. "Schools from all over the country were recruiting me, but my offers were from Miami (Ohio), Akron, Eastern Michigan and Cincinnati."

It's still too early for seniors to take official visits, but Patrick said he was familiar with the Cincinnati campus. "I attended a camp there in June and combined it with an unofficial visit. Everyone was so friendly, and everything looked new on the campus." The verbal commitment to Cincinnati sounded like a family decision. "I talked it over with my parents, and we all agreed that Cincinnati offered me a place to get a valuable degree."

The young man with the Nigerian last name made sure he saw several schools before deciding on Cincinnati. "I visited Miami and Akron, and I also visited Purdue and Indiana."

Patrick didn't necessarily know he was the fourteenth high schooler to make a verbal pledge to Brian Kelly and his staff, but he was very aware of the recruiting numbers at his position. "I was aware of the fact that they had offered other offensive linemen and were taking three. I also knew they had two linemen already committed."

When asked about his strength as an offensive lineman, Patrick gave an answer that probably fits well with his future offense. "I like to think that I'm a good pass blocker."

This is a young man with the frame to add some good weight, and he's been in the weight room trying to do just that. "We've got a new strength coach, and things are going well. I'm benching about 285 pounds."

Maintaining a 4.0 GPA is amazing with Patrick's schedule, in addition to playing football, he played for the Division II Stallion final four basketball team and the track team. The football squad (9-4) just missed qualifying for the Division III final four when it lost to New Albany 10-6.
