Amid mild temperatures, the Bearcats hit the Higher Ground practice fields in full gear for Tuesday's morning practice. They will have a second practice from 3 to 5 this afternoon.
-There is no shortage of "original" haircuts this summer among the players. Today, I got pictures of Adam Hoppel's new look as well as Corey Smith's. Leo Morgan went with a totally shaved head today-an excellent decision over yesterday's haircut.

-As expected, Earnest Jackson returned to practice today and reclaimed that #1 tight end position.
-Tony Pike continued his string of days as the #1 option at quarterback, but I thought Tony had probably his worst practice in a week. Unfortunately, I didn't think any of the other QB's were much better.
-The offensive line continues to see several players with the #1 group as Coach Quinn is apparently looking to find some depth. Khalil El-Amin and Jeff Linkenbach are both getting snaps at right tackle. Jason Kelce and Chris Jurek are getting the bulk of work at center. Jason had a couple bad snaps in the shotgun that had him running laps for parts of practice, but he got a lot of media attention afterwards as both beat writers interviewed him. Ken Rodriguez and Chris Flores are sharing some of the time at left guard, and Taylor Porter is even getting some time at Bujnoch's right tackle position. As Mario Duenas continues to get well, I would expect him to spell Trevor Canfield at right guard.
-Dominick Goodman was again in gear but did not participate in all drills.
-The coaches seem to be very happy with Leo Morgan's improved pass coverage.
-Yesterday I wrote about the two walk-on receivers, Kurt Shoemaker and Charley Howard. As if on cue, Shoemaker made a fabulous one-handed, leaping 35 yard catch down the sideline under good coverage by Justin Moore in the 1-on-1 drill. Fittingly, Charley Howard beat Haruki Nakamura on the very next play.
-There are a couple of cornhole games in the locker room at Higher Ground. I'm told you do not want to take on Tony Pike. He and Craig Carey are presently undefeated.
-The sophomore running backs, Jacob Ramsey and John Goebel, got a lot of the work in the 11-on-11 drill. Ramsey broke a couple of very nice runs-one for 15 yards and another for 30 yards. On the negative side, Jacob also fumbled twice during today's practice. John Goebel got loose for 25 yards.
-Haruki had his second consecutive day with an interception. Today he picked Ben Mauk in the red zone drill. Haruki almost got a second one.
-Mike Daniels had a tough day at practice. Coach Kelly was really trying to push Mike.
-The squad scrimmaged at the end of practice and here's what happened.
*Pike to Barnett +15. Mickens breaks up Pike's pass. Ramsey run +7. Pike to Wess +2. Bad snap. Pike to Martin with nice YAC for +25 gain. Mickens breaks up pass.
*Carey at QB. Pass incomplete. Goebel run +1. Carey to Giddens +8. Ramsey run +2.
*Grutza at QB. Great catch by Ramsey on screen pass but gained only 1 yard. Grutza to Barnett +7.
