Saturday, August 18, Practice Report

The Bearcats had their second major scrimmage of the summer today. Many players had family at today's scrimmage so it was a nice crowd. Here's what I saw.

Dustin Grutza and Craig Carey removed the red jerseys today to show their ability to run the football and to gain time out of the pocket.

Here are the statistics we got after the scrimmage:

Quarterbacks

Craig Carey 8 of 14 for 99 yards

Ben Mauk 3 of 6 for 41 yards

Dustin Grutza 6 of 9 for 120 yards

Tony Pike 4 of 8 for 22 yards

Running Backs

Butler Benton 6 carries for 9 yards

Bradley Glatthaar 3 carries for 11 yards

Jacob Ramsey 5 carries for 8 yards

Craig Carey 4 carries for 19 yards

John Goebel 1 carry for 2 yards

I did not get any stats for Greg Moore

Receiving

Marcus Barnett 2 catches for 77 yards

David Wess 2 catches for 43 yards

Dominick Goodman 2 catches for 14 yards

Antwuan Giddens 1 catch for 38 yards

Charley Howard 2 catches for 30 yards

Marty Gilyard 2 catches for 10 yards

Ben Guidugli 2 catches for 25 yards

I know Binns, Shoemaker and DeFilippo also had catches.

-The place kicking was below par prior to the actual scrimmage.  Jake Rogers missed an extra point and had another one blocked.  Jake also missed badly on a 40 yarder.  Brandon Yingling hit his two extra point attempts but missed from 40 yards out twice.  Also, in the scrimmage a snap was mishandled on an extra point attempt.

-Kazeem Alli played today, and I was told that Deon Reed was cleared by the NCAA to return to practice.

-Dustin Grutza threw two TD passes, but also made a really bad throw coming out from his own endzone.  Jason Whitehead intercepted the pass and returned it for a defensive TD.  In one of Dustin's touchdown throws, he avoided a rush and hit Antwuan Giddens for about a 40 yard score.  Dustin later connected with Marcus Barnett on a nice throw for 60+ yards.

-Here are the players I had making tackles for loss (TFL): Revels, Craig, Ferguson, Cornett, B. Jones, A. Williams (2), Byrd (2).

-A lot of the same players had sacks: Revels, Cornett, Newton, Hoppel, Craig, Byrd, C. Smith and Harrison.

-I had Mauk being sacked three times; Carey getting dumped twice and Pike being sacked once.  I forgot to record who got sacked on the others.

-Mauk had a TD throw to Goodman.

-Carey had a TD throw to Wess called back, but Wess did a nice job cutting back to break away for the score of about 45 yards.

-I had Ryan Manalac, Mike Mickens and DeAngelo Smith with pass break-ups or excellent coverage.

-In one of the better battles in camp, Andre Revels started at MLB.  Ryan Manalac has recently returned to the practice field and said he is again 100%.

-Snaps were once again a periodic problem.

-The hit of the day occurred down field when Bradley Glatthaar and Aaron Webster collided.

-Craig Carey had a nice scramble for 20 yards.

-Hoke and Byrd also put good pressure on Mauk once causing him to throw the ball away.

-Ben Guidugli had a late TD reception when the 3's were in.

I really thought the defense played well except for a couple of big plays, but it looked like the offense was given the win.  I can never understand how they score these types of scrimmages.

I'll have a story on Adam Hoppel in the next day or two.
