Bearcat Football to Open 2008 Season

Plans are now set for the Bearcats and Colonels to opoen the 2008 football season.

CINCINNATI — For the third time in four years, the University of Cincinnati kicks off the football season on a Thursday night when it hosts Eastern Kentucky on Aug. 28 at Nippert Stadium.

The Bearcats shut out the Colonels, 31-0, in 2006 in the only previous matchup with the Colonels. UC is 6-0 all-time against current members of the Ohio Valley Conference.

The first of six non-league contests, the Bearcats are set to face 13 foes during the 2008 regular season. Ambitious in making plans, UC is the only team in the country scheduled to meet two non-conference foes — No. 8 Oklahoma and No. 19 Hawai'i— that played in the 2008 Bowl Championship Series.

Cincinnati returns 16 starters in 2008, including all-Americans Mike Mickens, Terrill Byrd, and Kevin Huber. UC paced the country with 26 interceptions and shared the national lead with 42 takeaways. Cincinnati ranked 13th in scoring defense (18.8 ppg) and 16th in scoring off ense (36.3 ppg).
