Coaching Candidate #3

As names start to clear for the head coaching job at the University of Cincinnati we take a look at our third coaching candidate.

Al Golden

Age - 40

Overall Record – 19-29

Despite an overall losing record Al Golden is considered one of the countries top up and coming head coaches. In 2006 Golden was hired at Temple after coaching stops at Virginia, Boston College and Penn State.

Golden played for Penn State from 1987-1991 and spent one season with the New England Patriots.

His highest position prior to taking over at Temple came at Virginia when he was named defensive coordinator by Al Groh. At that time he was the youngest DC in the country in Division 1-A.

While his record may not have the showings of success the Temple Owls are a much improved program since Golden arrived. In the three previous years before taking over the Owls they combined for an overall record of 3-31 and was removed from the Big East Conference.

In Golden's first season the Owls played an independent schedule before going into the MAC in 2007. After going 1-11 in 2006 the Owls have posted the following overall marks.

2007 – 4-8

2008 – 5-7

2009 – 9-3

At this point Golden is saying he has not spoken with any other program and is very happy at Temple. Golden is also paid very well at Temple at just over $500,000 per season.
