Bearcats Dominate Glass

The Cincinnati Bearcats were down five at the half against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights but were able to bounce back for the win 65-58. In the second half Cincinnati out-rebounded Rutgers 19-7, helped by the fact that senior center Hamady Ndiaye missed several minutes in the half in foul trouble.

Cincinnati was lead on the offensive end by Deonta Vaughn who scored 17 points shooting 5-9 including three three point field goals. Vaughn also added four rebounds and two assists in 33 minutes of action on Saturday night.

Freshman Lance Stephenson had another good night scoring ten points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out two assists and added three steals in just 28 minutes of play. Stephenson also did a great job defensively and made a highlight reel bucket in the first half.

Off the bench, the Bearcats were led by Yancy Gates who scored ten points and grabbed eight rebounds in only 25 minutes of action. Gates still must be more involved as the sophomore from Winthrow high school still only received seven field goal attempts, which is not enough for a big man as skilled as Gates. Rashad Bishop also had a solid night scoring nine points in just 22 minutes of action on the night and grabbed three rebounds.

For Rutgers, they were led by Jonathan Mitchell and Mike Rosario. Mitchell scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 32 minutes of action. Rosario, Rutgers leading scorer lead the Scarlet Knights to a 30-25 halftime lead by scoring twelve first half points, but was held to zero in the second half. He became more of the focus for the Cincinnati defense who was able to set down Rosario who averages 18 points per game.

The Bearcats will take on the Pittsburgh Panthers Monday Night at Fifth Third Arena, fresh off Pitts upset of the Syracuse Orange on Saturday 82-72. The starting backcourt combined for 57 points including 45 from Ashton Gibbs and Jermaine Dixon. Dixon, a senior guard who missed the first eight games of the season after returning from a broken foot has had his minutes gradually increase until Saturday where he scored 21 points, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out four assists in 36 minutes of action.
