Tigers in prime position

One of the top junior cornerbacks in Alabama made a stop through Clemson earlier this summer for the Dabo Swinney Football Camp. He already owns over 10 offers and has roots near Tigertown.

Oxford High School defensive back Trae Elston recorded 66 tackles and eight pass breakups as a sophomore 2009 season. His offer sheet includes several programs from around the Southeast, including Clemson. Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Kentucky and LSU have also offered.

"I grew up in Augusta, Georgia. That's one of the closest universities to my home," Elston recently told CUTigers. "I lived there until I came here in first grade."

The one-day stop for Clemson's camp was one of several camp visits this summer.

"It was exciting. There were some good players there," he said of the Clemson trip. "I liked the stadium and everything. We didn't really get to go around the campus really. From what I saw I liked, but we were mostly on the practice field."

Elston also camped at Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee and Texas.

He's been to games at Alabama and Auburn this fall. In fact, Elston was in Auburn last weekend when Clemson played at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

"It was an exciting game. I was watching the Clemson safety. No. 2, [DeAndre] McDaniel, since he's one of the top safeties in the draft," Elston said. "Clemson almost had it and won, they were fixing to have it at the end."

A trip to Clemson for the South Carolina game could be on tap.

When asked to list his favorites, Elston said, "Clemson is my number one school. All of the other schools are even."

So far this season, Elston said he's already racked up 51 tackles, two interceptions and a punt return for touchdown.

Clemson is recruiting him as a defensive back. He'd prefer to play safety at the next level.
