Whoops, Tigers Fall to Coastal

Clemson had 16 baserunners but managed only one run in a 5-1 defeat to Coastal Carolina Tuesday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Brian Waack (3-1) earned the win for the Chanticleers, allowing one run on six hits in 6.1 innings.

Tiger starter Jason Berken suffered the loss, dropping his record to 4-2.

Coastal Carolina grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Ryan McGraw singled to lead off the inning. After stealing second and third, McGraw scored when Brett Grandstrand hit an RBI groundout to second. The Chanticleers scored their second run after Brandon Powell doubled to right center, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on Jeff Baker's double down the right line.

Coastal Carolina's two runs were the most allowed by the Tigers in the first inning this season at home. Prior to tonight's game, the Tigers had only given up one run in the first inning at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Clemson got on the board in the fourth inning to cut the Chanticleer lead in half. Brad McCann walked and later advanced to third on a fielder's choice by Jeff Hourigan. McCann then scored on Zane Green's bloop single to left field that the shortstop lost in the sky.

Coastal Carolina added another run in the sixth when Powell stole home.

The Tigers threatened but fizzled in the bottom of the seventh. Chanticleer pitcher Waack hit David Slevin to lead off the inning. Zane Green then singled to right center on an 0-2 pitch. Both advanced on Herman Demmink's sacrifice bunt. After Russell Triplett walked to load the bases, Michael Johnson struck out and McCann grounded to second to end the threat.

The Chanticleers took a 5-1 lead in the eighth when Tyler Hasbrouck doubled to left center and scored on Adam Pernasilici's single up the middle. Pernasilici took second on the throw home and advanced to third on the errant throw. Steve Pinocchio then drove him home with a sacrifice fly to left center.

The Tigers will return to action on Wednesday, as they complete the midweek series with Coastal Carolina at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
