On Tuesday, participants from across the country will arrive in Beaverton, Ore. for The Opening.
According to a release from ESPN.com, "Every position and every aspect of the game will be highlighted over the course of the five-day program (July 5-9) with players being put to the ultimate test by the world's top athletes and coaches. Nike will ultimately crown winners for the Nike 7ON tournament, Nike Linemen Challenge and SPARQ Rating National Championship."
Clemson will be heavily represented with T.J. Burrell, Travis Blanks, Jay Guillermo, Germone Hopper and Chad Kelly all scheduled to be in attendance.
"I'm hoping to win it," Kelly said. "I'm going there to do the best I can and work as hard as I can, and hopefully come out there a winner. If that's just the SPARQ Rating or he 7-on-7, it would be great to win one of them, but I'm going out there to win both."
Participants in The Opening were chosen as top performers at one of the 12 Nike Football Training Camp sites earlier this year.
Blanks, who attended the Nike Football Training Camps in Athens, Ga. and Tallahassee, Fla., wants to show that he's worthy of his four-star billing.
"I feel like I have something to prove," he said. "I'm always up to the challenge of competing against the top people in the country, so I'm real excited about that."
On Wednesday, the campers will compete in the Nike SPARQ Combine. Thursday is scheduled for position specific drills and training. The 7-on-7 and linemen challenge are on Friday and Saturday.
Kelly has politicked to team up with his future teammates for the 7-on-7 competition.
"Hopefully, we can get our guys on the same team. They've got NFL guys who are going to be out there," he said. "I tried to sneak in a little [request] to the head guy…I said, ‘Let us team up.' I know he saw me and Travis' tweets, because Travis was like, ‘We better be on the same team. Because, if we're not, I'm going to pick you off.' We were just joking around. It was pretty cool."
Blanks is excited about getting to spend time with the guys he's yet to meet in person.
"That'll be nice. I met Jay. That's it, really, because he was at camp with me. It will be good to get out there and meet some of those other guys," he said.
Clemson targets Nick Dawson, Trae Elston, Todd Gurley, Joe Harris and Jamal Marcus are also slated to participate in The Opening.
"Just having the chance to go out there with all those great players out there is a dream come true," Kelly said. "It's definitely going to be fun traveling across the country and participating in this big event."
