The Olympic High School senior, who visited Clemson on Thursday, also had offers from East Carolina, Winthrop and Appalachian State, among others.

"It's high-major basketball," Smith told "Who wouldn't play that kind of caliber? I'm comfortable there. The situation I'm in, it's close to home."

He's also taken a liking to Brownell.

"He keeps it straight with you. He's going to make us work hard to earn a spot on the floor. He's going to make us into better people, rather than just making us into a better player," Smith said. "He talks more about morals an education, rather than sports, which is good."

Thursday's visit lasted nearly five hours.

"We toured the college, talked to the academic advisors. I talked to someone with the business management major and to coach Brownell," Smith said.

It was his second trip Tigertown. Smith said his mother had been several times prior to Thursday's visit.

"My aunt, she went to Clemson, so I have Tiger blood," he said.

Smith joins Jordan Roper and Jaron Blossomgame in the Tigers' 2012 class.

As a junior at Olympic, Smith averaged 12 points a game.

His recruiter of note for Clemson is assistant coach Earl Grant. Top Stories
