On a cold, rainy, windy Saturday night on Worsham Field, only No. 13 Clemson reached pay dirt.
"I'm just really proud of them for not giving up a touchdown," said Tiger head coach Dabo Swinney. "To come up here and hold Virginia Tech to three points, I don't know when the last time that happened up here. It might be a long time before it happens again."
It was 1995, in a shutout loss to Cincinnati.
Defense wins games, too...
"We're excited for those players. Those players went out there and did what we asked them to do." - Kevin Steele
"It was great, encouraging. Guys got tired of hearing about this and that. They really stepped up and played well today. We do use a lot of those things we hear as motivational tactics. The guys are really starting to come together." - Tajh Boyd
"We've got a long way to go, but we've got the right attitude. They bought into it. They're working to try to be the best. That's all you can ask. We've just got to keep coaching them and help them get better." - Steele
"It says a lot about a football team when you don't quite play as well offensively, but your defense comes in and plays well. To be able to come into an environment and win a game like this, you've got be extremely excited about it." - Chad Morris
"We've seen improvement. Those guys went out there and did a really nice job. Obviously, to hold a team like Virginia Tech, in this stadium, to three points, that has been done in a long time, that I know of." - Steele
"I'm really proud of our defense. You can't say enough about them." - Swinney
A nice play to D.A...
"The touchdown to D.A. -- the screen slip. I was really wanting to call the play another 10 yards down the field, inside the 20. It was the right time, the right hash, it was set. We just went with it. Tajh did a great job buying time to make the play to D.A., which put us up 17-3." - Chad Morris
"Eddie Whitley, he didn't over play it that time and was over the top of me. He was waiting for me to run my traditional, little wheel route. Since he was inside, I went inside of him. Tajh threw the ball inside and I was able to run that in for the touchdown." - Dwayne Allen
"We weren't expecting them to bring blitz. It was one of those things, I was trying to buy a little time, just keep rolling, keep rolling, waiting for something to pop open. He slipped the guy to the inside. I kind of threw it to a spot and made a play." - Boyd
"I was supposed to wheel up the sideline after I stalk blocked. Eddie Whitley did a great job. He covered it well. Tajh just made a heck of a play by throwing it back inside, and I adjusted to the ball." Allen
Not quite as sharp at QB...
"I didn't have as great a statistical game. But, at the end of the day, who cares? If I'm throwing for 500 yards a game and we lose every game, it doesn't really benefit anybody at the end. The best part about it? We got the win. Statistical things don't really matter to me, at this point. We're just trying to rack up these wins." - Boyd
"I think you look at a lot of things. The weather conditions, obviously, had a lot to do with it. I think they're scheme and what they do, I think that had something to do with it, too. We talked to him about making good decisions with the football. I'm proud of Tajh." - Morris
"I thought he managed the game well. Ran the ball well, made some great zone reads pulling the ball well, even though he slipped down a couple of times. He made some huge, huge pulls, to keep the chains moving." - Morris
"Tajh is growing up right in front of us. I'm really proud of him." - Morris
Halftime wardrobe change...
"Tajh kept telling me right before half, 'Coach, I don't have any zip on my ball, right now, because my arms are really cold.' We made sure to put him in sleeves, to start the second half, because we had to keep his arm warm." - Morris
"For some reason, I couldn't get warm in the first half. My arm was so tight. I'm missing throws here and there, I mean easy throws. I'm sitting there like, 'Seriously?' I came back in the second half, got my Donovan on, threw my jacket on the sideline. We just finished the game off really strong." - Boyd
