Fedora phoned Gurley on Sunday afternoon in-between his Shrine Bowl responsibilities. "It felt good for him to start recruiting me after being there just two days," Gurley said. "He's just trying to build relationships with recruits. It felt pretty special."
Gurley, a 6-foot-1, 192-pound running back from Tarboro (N.C.), said his conversation with Fedora was brief and introductory in nature.
"He just wanted me to give him a chance since he was new," Gurley said. "He talked about what his [offensive] system could do for me and [how] he always had a 1,000-yard rusher. He wants me to get down there and visit him."
Gurley, who has made countless unofficial visits to Chapel Hill, hasn't scheduled his official visit to UNC yet. But, he's looking to set something up in early January.
Gurley has, however, taken official visits to the rest of the schools on his final four list. He officially visited Georgia in September and both Clemson and NC State in November.
At this stage of his recruitment, Gurley denies having a leader.
"I just like everybody the same," Gurley said. "I haven't really been worrying about recruiting all that much."
The Shrine Bowl roster includes several players verbally committed to Clemson, UNC, and NC State. However, none have attempted to recruit Gurley, yet.
"We've just been hanging out and just chilling," Gurley said. "So we haven't been talking about recruiting stuff."
Unlike most of the players playing in the 75th Annual Shrine Bowl, Gurley didn't arrive in Spartanburg until 9 p.m. Saturday, primarily because he took the ACT that morning.
