Thatch Still Eyeing Clemson?

Greensboro's Martel Thatch, who earned All-Conference honors as a junior, is seeing his offer list grow by the day. CUTigers.com caught up with Martel tonight and we've got the latest on one of the south's most athletic safety prospects.

S Martel Thatch
6-2, 180, 4.45
Dudley High School
Greensboro, North Carolina

The 6-2, 180-pound rising senior had an impressive 91 tackles and 9 interceptions including 3 returns for touchdowns last season. Thatch, who recently ran a 4.5 at the Shrine Bowl combine in Charlotte, has been timed as fast as 4.4.

The offer list for this prize recruit currently includes Clemson, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, East Carolina, Miami, Florida, Vanderbilt and Duke. There is no leader or top 5 for Thatch at this time. "I'm wide open," stated Thatch.

Coach O'Cain will be spending a great deal of time in Greensboro because Thatch is one of three highly recruited players for Dudley High School. Defensive end DeMario Pressley and running back Jamaal Edwards join Thatch in trying to lead Dudley back to the state championship game.

Thatch doesn't plan to be distracted by recruiting once the season starts. "I plan to commit before the season starts. My coach says its good for players being recruited as athletes to commit early."

What factors will influence his decision? "How good the players and coaches get along. I want a place where the players have a good relationship with the coach. I also want a place where they graduate their players."

Clemson is currently recruiting Thatch at free safety, which is his preference. Thatch's favorite Tiger is current receiver Derrick Hamilton.
We will continue to keep you posted on this outstanding safety from North Carolina, right up through signing day 2004.
