UAB 2 Clemson 1 Quoteboard

CLEMSON - In need of some timely hitting, Clemson lost 2-1 to UAB in the 2012 season opener at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The Tigers stranded nine base runners, including four in scoring position.

"I thought [Kevin] Brady, [Matt] Campbell, [Daniel Gossett], they all pitched well," said Jack Leggett. "We played good defense, didn't do anything to hurt us that way. We just didn't do anything offensively to get excited about. We had some opportunities, the right guys up, had a few guys up.

"We never got into any offensive flow. We had a couple of innings where we got excited a little bit. We had five, six, seven innings where we didn't do much offensively, by getting our lead-off man on base."

UAB pitchers hit five Clemson batters and allowed just four hits.

"Their kid pitched well. He beat us with a fastball and a change-up. That's what he beat us with. We had 13 fly ball outs. It's tough to win that way," Leggett said.

Given the lack of pop in the composite bats, he would prefer to see more balls batted on the ground.

"It doesn't do you much good to hit the ball in the air with the bats and the way the ball carries," Leggett said. "We've got to do a good job hitting the ball on the ground. We've got a little speed on our team, so we've got to be able to utilize that."

Spencer Kieboom had two of the hits and the lone RBI.

"Overall, I didn't think we swung the bats too bad as a team. We just hit a lot of balls right at some people, couldn't put anything together," he said.

Kevin Brady back in the Friday spot…
"I felt like it went pretty well. Obviously, there were a couple of things to clean up, like my location. That team, they came out and hit the ball." - Brady

"I thought Brady looked good. He did a good job for us." - Leggett

"I've still got to keep working on that change-up. Once I get all three pitches going…we're still working on [change-up]." - Brady

Good work in relief…
"Matt Campbell came in and did a great job as well. Goose, first-time on the mound, he's never been out here. He did a great job as well. I thought he kept his composure." - Kieboom

"I'm comfortable with them going to the bullpen. We have a terrific [bullpen]. We can give the ball to anyone and they're going to do a good job." - Brady Top Stories
