Clemson offers Memphis DE

On Monday, Clemson defensive ends coach Marion Hobby sent an offer out to Central High School for this 6-foot-5, 245-pound junior.

The recipient of the offer was Frank Herron, who already has offers from Arkansas, Notre Dame and Tennessee, among others.

"It was a big surprise, because Clemson has great athletes," Herron told CUTigers.

He added, "I was getting mail from them. Some people say mail doesn't mean anything."

Herron and Hobby spoke on Monday night about the offer.

"[Hobby] was saying I have great, tremendous upside," Herron said. "He was saying he loves how I just move from the 3-technique to an outside linebacker, to rush the quarterback and [also] going through the trenches. He likes my speed rush."

Clemson is "definitely, definitely" a place he wants to visit.

"My coach was talking about Clemson being a beautiful campus, like a place you can fall in love with. I plan on going up there for a visit."

Herron was at Memphis watching spring practice on Wednesday. He's also visited Alabama and Ole Miss for junior days. Trips to Auburn, Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi State are in the cards.

Cincinnati, Memphis, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Purdue, South Florida, Southern Miss and Vanderbilt have also offered.

He doesn't claim a list of favorites.

As a junior, Herron registered 54 tackles, seven sacks, seven tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and a touchdown.
