Previewing N.C. State

CLEMSON - Defense has been the calling card for Brad Brownell's teams during his first two seasons at Clemson.

WHAT: N.C. State at Clemson
WHERE: Littlejohn Coliseum (10,000) - Clemson, S.C.
WHEN: Saturday, February 25 (2:31 p.m.)
SPREAD: Clemson -3.5
TV: ACC Network (Steve Martin, Eddie Fogler)

A stiff test awaits when N.C. State heads to Littlejohn Coliseum on Saturday afternoon for a 2:31 p.m. showdown. The Wolfpack are third in the ACC in scoring average [73.8] and second in assists [16.3].

All five starters average in double-figures.

"It's kind of a pick your poison kind of thing with them. Their ability to score the ball, their ability to run in transition -- they're tough to guard. We're going to have to play really good team defense," said Tanner Smith, who tied with Andre Young with a team-high 47 steals.

"The other thing is their size. Everybody is above 6-5 in their starting five. Their length, size and their ability to score, it's a tough thing to do, to defend guys like that for 40 minutes. We're really going to have to be locked in and do a really good job."

Brownell thinks N.C. State is "one of the most talented offensive teams" in the ACC.

"I think C.J. Leslie is playing exceptional basketball right now, really athletic player, [and] a guy who scores around the rim, a really good driver. [He] is actually improving his jump shot," he said. "Great balance with Scott Wood out on the perimeter making 3's. Lorenzo Brown does a really good job, I think, of running their team. Richard Howell, inside, is a big, strong post-player that might be one of the best offensive rebounders in the league.

"They're a team that presents a lot of matchup problems. They've got five guys in double figures. We will have to play very well, defensively, to beat them," Brownell said.

Clemson [14-13, 6-7 ACC] has won three of their last four while N.C. State [18-10, 7-6 ACC] has dropped three in a row Duke, Florida State and North Carolina.

"They're on a little bit of a slide right now, but they'll come in here with some fire," Smith said. "The thing is -- they've played three of the best three teams in their last three games, so they've played very good competition."

NC State leads the all-time series 97-47, including a 31-29 mark in Clemson.

The Wolfpack also won the last meeting, 69-61 last season.
