Making a name for himself

This junior prospect followed up his first season on the football field with an impressive showing on the basketball court. And he'll be in Clemson on Saturday.

DE Davaris McGowens Profile

Davaris McGowens of Eastside [Taylors] finished his junior season on the hardwood as the AAA State Player of the Year. He averaged 18 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.

Now, it's back to football.

"My football coach said since I came straight from football to basketball, he told me just to take a little break off. I'm going to get back into the weight room and I'm going to get stronger and faster," McGowens told CUTigers in a recent interview.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound rising senior will make a visit to Clemson on Saturday for the Tigers' second Junior Day.

"I'm just ready to get back down there and see what it's like. That's not the first-time I'm going down there, but I just want to see how it is," he said.

Clemson isn't the only school pursuing McGowens as a football player.

"I've got North Carolina, South Carolina, North Carolina State -- that's about it," he said.

On the hardwood, McGowens has an offer from Jacksonville. Winthrop watched him play last Tuesday night, the final game of his junior season. Top Stories
