Coach West is recruiting Merling as a tight end for the Tigers and that if fine with the prize recruit. "I think Clemson has a nice offensive system for a tight end. That's what I like."

"My strengths are my speed, my ability to come off the ball fast and my hands," said Merling. The talented prospect, who runs a 4.6 forty, plans to continue to improve during his senior season as he works on his strength and his blocking.

Merling has camped at South Carolina this summer and he also plans to camp at Georgia on July 11. "South Carolina was alright. It was a nice workout. A lot of good competition was there."

Although he did not camp at Clemson this summer, Merling is very familiar with the Tigers campus. "Clemson has a nice campus. Lots of hills and a lot of walking."

What factors will Merling consider when deciding which college will win the sweepstakes for his services? "I will look at the system they run. I will also look at their off-season conditioning program." Merling plans to major in business management.
