Four-star SG snags Clemson offer

Not long after Steve Smith was hired by Brad Brownell as the newest assistant on the basketball staff, an offer went out to one of the top 2014 guards in the country.

Smith had already offered Shelton Mitchell by the time he was formally introduced as an assistant at Clemson.

The offer went out exactly seven days before the announcement.

"On Thursday [May 24], I got a text from my AAU coach saying that he talked to their new assistant and that Clemson had offered me," Mitchell told CUTigers earlier this week.

He and Smith spoke shortly thereafter.

"I actually called him Friday afternoon, when I was on the way to Georgia for a basketball tournament," Mitchell said.

What was the message?

"They want me there and I'm one of their top priorities."

How does he feel about the Tigers' offer?

"I like Clemson. I like all the schools that are interested…one of my good friends, [Patrick Rooks], is committed there."

Along with Clemson, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Missouri and Mississippi State have offered.

There is no favorite.

"All the scores that have offered me, I like them," Mitchell said.

As a sophomore at Cuthbertson High School [Waxhaw, N.C.], he averaged 25 points, five assists and five rebounds.
