Swinney: It was great to get back to work. I like what I saw in terms of tempo and energy. They seem like they are close right now and that's good because that means they were doing their summer work.
Little bit of news for you guys with Justin Parker. He's got a groin issue and he can't quite seem to get it well and it's going to hamper him for a little while. He's a guy we should have redshirted but we didn't. We are going to try and steal a year back with him because he's going to be limited for a while. We really think he's got a chance to be a great player. Kind of like what we did with Kourtnei Brown. He wants to do it. Little tidbit for y'all.
HOW DID RASHARD HALL AND TONY STEWARD LOOK TODAY??
Swinney: They both looked great. I did not see any hesitation in either one of them and I watched them quite a bit. Rashard played all last year hurt and now he's way better than he ever was last year. Smooth. It's just one day but he looked good. Tony looked great. Looked comfortable and had his legs underneath him. But it's just shorts. I want to see them in pads. Tony didn't wear a brace on either knee. So he looks good. Weighed in at 231 pounds and was 240 last year. He's chisled up. Mentally he's better than he was at any point last year.
WHAT WAS THE THOUGHT PROCESS WITH SAMMY?
Swinney: Well it's like I said from day one. There's been some things that needed to be done and I told him back in May it would be four games or two games and it would be up to him. But I'm proud of him because he did everything that was asked of him. I had people write me letters with the community service that he did. All you can do is respond when you make a mistake and he responded the right way.
Things that sometimes you think are the worst in your life turn out to be the best thing that happens to you. You grow from it. But there are consequences for your actions and that's something we talk about all the time. After tonight we'll move forward. We've got 29 days to prepare for the opener. We'll be ready and No. 2 will end up having a great year for us.
DO YOU THINK THE BACKLASH FROM THE FANS WITH THIS DECISION WILL BE BAD?
Swinney: Those people need to be the head coach. I'm the head coach and I made that decision. Whatever decision that I made wasn't going to please people. I'm not in the business to please people. I'm not going to please the media... some but not others. I'm never going to please the fans. If I worry about that, I am going to be sitting in the stands with them. I have to do what I feel is best for the individual involved, for the team and for the program. I'm not really worried about what other people think.
