The commitment: CB Mackensie Alexander, Immokalee HS [Fla.]
Date committed: Feb. 6, 2013
Ranked: Four-star, No. 7 CB
Other options: Mississippi State, Auburn, Kentucky, Rutgers
Position status: Even before the graduation of Xavier Brewer and transfer of Cortez Davis, cornerback was identified as a position of need for Clemson. Returning from last year are Bashaud Breeland, Darius Robinson, Garry Peters and Martin Jenkins, who sat out the season with a redshirt. Along with Alexander, Clemson signed several cornerbacks in February, including Marcus Edmond, Adrian Baker and Cordrea Tankersley.
The evaluation: Alexander is a physically gifted corner that already plays the game at a collegiate level. He plays his edge tough against the run and is a sure tackler. Thrives in man coverage where he lets his natural cover instincts take over, physical at the line of scrimmage. [A] very confident kid takes on challenges. Alexander makes an impact on special teams as a punt returner. - Geoff Vogt, Scout.com
Estimated impact: 2013. Alexander projects as a contributor from day one. He may not win a starting job, but he'll certainly compete for one of the spots with Breeland and Robinson. Jenkins will take over at either nickel or dime. Peters, who enters spring practice in Dabo Swinney's dog house, will also work at one of the outside cornerback spots.
