Commitment capsule: Johnson

Up next in the commitment capsule series is defensive back Jadar Johnson, who's already on the Clemson campus.

The commitment: DB Jadar Johnson, Orangeburg-Wilkinson HS

Date committed: March 7, 2012

Ranked: Three-star, No. 70 S

Other options: UNC, N.C. State

Position status: Both safety positions are wide-open and Johnson could work at either one during his college career. So far this spring, Travis Blanks and Robert Smith are the No. 1s at free and strong, respectively. Virginia Tech transfer Jerrodd Williams is healthy and in the mix. So is Ronald Geohaghan. Several freshman will be added to the fold later this summer -- Cordrea Tankersley, Jayron Kearse, Korrin Wiggins and Ryan Carter.

The evaluation: The old saying, ‘This guy is a football player.' fits Jadar Johnson. He could play on both sides of the ball at the college level, either at a wide receiver or safety. Johnson isn't the most explosive athlete, but his movements and instincts for the game make up for what he lacks in suddeness. Strap on the pads and turn the lights on and Johnson is at his best.

Estimated impact: 2014. With so many young safeties on this fall's roster, it's tough to make the call here. Johnson, who dislocated his elbow in the early portion of spring practice, could take a redshirt this fall. But he could also earn a spot on the two-deep depth chart. Top Stories
