Hobby offers under-the-radar DT

Clemson DE coach Marion Hobby let this 6-6, 270-pound defensive tackle from Alabama know the Tigers offered.

McAdory High School [McCalla, Ala.] junior Cory Thomas was informed of the news on Thursday.

"It was definitely a good feeling. My coach told me and I was like, ‘Clemson?' Because the last time I had from them, they came to see me play in the state championship game. My coach told me that they wanted to offer," Thomas told CUTigers that afternoon.

He added, "I called the coach, coach Hobby. I called him and he said, ‘Are you interested in Clemson.'

"I was like, ‘Yes, sir. I do.' He said I had an offer from them. He said I could add Clemson to the list. It was great."

Thomas also holds offers from Mississippi State, Memphis, Middle Tennessee and South Alabama.

There's still plenty for him to learn about Clemson.

"I know they're ACC. I know they've got a pretty good program. It's a good school. They put out good linemen, good defensive linemen. That's all I know," he said.

A visit could be on the horizon.

"If I don't get to the spring game for junior day, I'm going to try to make it up there for camp," Thomas said.

Earlier this spring, Thomas visited Mississippi State and Auburn for junior days. He plans to visit Memphis sometime later this spring.

Who leads?

"I would say Mississippi State is in my top spot. After that, it's Memphis. Clemson would fall somewhere, like, third."

A few factors have the Bulldogs in that top spot.

"It's a great coaching staff. When I went down there for junior day, it was just the environment…I just like the environment. And the coaching staff makes you feel wanted," Thomas said.

As a junior, he had 88 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and eight sacks.
