Throwback offer

Clemson defensive backs coach Mike Reed fancies himself an old school kind of guy, at least that's what he told this North Carolina prospect.

CB Mike Hughes Profile

On Tuesday, Reed was by New Bern High School to see sophomore cornerback Mike Hughes.

"[Reed] visited my school. I got his number [but] he wanted my mom to call. He told me that he was old fashioned. He gives offers to the parents first. We called him later on that day and he told me that he had given me an offer," Hughes told CUTigers earlier this week.

What did Reed say during the phone call to Hughes and his mom?

"He was just, pretty much, saying that I have everything they need. He would just like for me to come up there and be apart of their program."

The 5-foot-10, 160-pound prospect is still learning about the Tigers.

"I know they're pretty good. Sammy Watkins is coming back, so I believe they'll be pretty strong."

Hughes hasn't taken a trip to Clemson, but he has visited N.C. State and North Carolina. A Clemson stop could be on the horizon.

"I'm already planning to get down there," he said.

Florida is another potential destination this summer.

Along with Clemson, East Carolina, UNC, N.C. State and Virginia have offered. He hopes to add another from a school in the southeast.

"Hopefully, I'll get South Carolina. I like them pretty good," Hughes said.

As a sophomore, Hughes had 300 yards receiving, 155 yards rushing and five total touchdowns on offense. Defensively, he had 44 tackles, five interceptions, one sack, and a tackle for loss. Top Stories
